Had To Change Eyes On My Mark V 30-06

I have had four of the hardest days I have ever hunted in my life and that is saying something. I have been hunting in the Old River Swamp which logging and Katrina have devastated. Some of it looks thicker than the bush in Tanzania. Then you add 4 days of hard to light rain with an hour or two brake every once in a while and you have got the makings of some hard hunting.

I would work my way through maybe a quarter of mile of thick under growth due to trees being cut out and Katrina blowing a bunch over until I could make it to a lower area or slew where they left a stand of Cyprus trees and the buck would use these areas for crossings.

Well I have a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44mm on my Mark V 30-06. Well, it just is not working and I should have known that. It is to much power in some of this stuff for the lowest setting of 4.5, makes me feel claustrophobic .

Now on top of that I was up on a log pile that was at least 11 feet high. Good place to be and I saw three Does but not allowed to kill them in Old River and they never knew I was on the log pile. Started to leave to go to a new spot when my foot slipped and I fell 8ft off the opposite side and a corner of a log caught me right in the middle of my chest and almost knocked me out. Lots my breath and I all most passed out. It took me a good three minutes just get my breath back and my chest was already bruised before I stood up. Figure I broke a rib because it hurts to cough and can only sleep on my left sided. My rifle and scope hit real hard but I tried it out and it was still sighted in correctly.

Went ahead and hunted the rest of the day and took Aleive for pain and hunted for three more days with no luck. I know this is a lot of info but I say all this because I have changed my scope on my 06 to a Zeiss 3-9x40mm Z and it will serve me better plus has made the rifle even lighter. Sure hope the rest of the season goes better.

Sorry to hear that about your fall. Hope ya get to feelin better.
I have seen those tangles down there and I would not want to try to retrieve even a B&C buck out of it. But I would if I had the chance

Dang! That must have hurt! You're sure you're okay? Sort of?

Best of luck to ya the rest of the season...

Yeah, I think I am, can't cough real hard or sneeze without a lot of pain but other wise I seem to be ok. Going tomorrow the last day of center fire season then starts primitive for two weeks before center fire season opens again.

Nancy said, if you get something how are you going to drag it out. I said, "little, very little at a time"

Yeah on retrieving one and if it is a B&C which they have in this over grown swamp and ticket I will retrieve him. I hope I get a chance before the Pearl River starts coming up due to rain. When the river reaches 18' they close Old River.

That does sound like some tough hunting. Glad you did not get hurt any worse than you did. Hope somebody knows where you hunt in case something would happen.

I show my wife every time before I leave on the map the area I will be hunting in Old River (15,000 acres). What is so cool is my cell phone works this year in the swamp for the first time in all these years. The cell phone works so far every where I have gone in Old River. I think they have a new tower by the bridge that crosses the Pearl leaving Mississippi into Bogalusa La. She also knows how to get a hold of both the game wardens who are friends of mine if I have not shown up at a certain time and would let them know where I said I was going.

It is hard to find anyone to hunt with me because it is work and you have got to want to hunt the area. So most of the time I go by myself and take a pack with things I need.

Hope you`re doing ok and get better soon!....I`ll bet that in that terrain, you wish you would have had that Remy M7 with the 1-3x20 V3???

You never know sometimes what surprises one may run into. But a 4.5x14 is more of an open range plains scope??

For my most recent hog hunt on a private ranch an hours drive for me, which is loaded with thickets, I removed my 2.5-8x28 Nikon EER scout and put on my 300 WSM compact a 1.5-5x20 VX3 which came off my 375 Ruger. Sure glad I did.

Even the 3x on the low end might be a little too much when you`re in that thick stuff!!

BTW!.......... Happy Birthday U `ol buzzard!!!............

....................I knew it was your birthday because you told me so in an earlier e/mail. Mine was on Nov. 25th! We`re 5 days apart! Not in the age dept though,,,,just out birthdates!..........

Stay off those high log piles!!!!.........

No problem Big Squeeze, I will stay off the log piles :) Just got back from going this afternoon which is the last day of the first centerfire season down here and I have only seen does, which are not legal in rifle season. My 3-9 Zeiss works just fine. A front came through and temps were 38-39 degrees by 4:430 and the wind was up to 20 miles an hour. On top of that the river was rising from the rains of last Thursday, Friday and Saturday and I almost got cut off this evening. I had to drive my four wheeler across two places that the river was rushing over and the water was already over 2 feet deep. I did not think the river would rise that fast today but it sure did.
