Headed out in the morning!

Got everything loaded up for 20 days out moose hunting. Just about everything is on the menu caribou, bears of any color, wolves, small game and moose. I have a 10 hour drive and then another 3 hours in the SXS to where we will be hunting.

Hopefully I’ll have some great pictures for you guys in a couple weeks.

We spent 8 days out near chicken. Over 130 miles covered on the SXS, miles glassed. Only saw two moose the day before season started. The caribou are hanging up in zone 1 so nothing in the area we were in.

With the lack of moose being seen we decided to regroup and head to another area. It was some gorgeous country but pretty thick ground cover making it tough to sight game. Had a pretty good sized bear wander thru camp one night but never got a look at him.

This year was a bust! Spent 8 days out near Chicken. Put over 130 miles on the SXS, dozens of miles on the boot soles. Glasses miles of country. Only saw two moose. One a nubbin bull and cow. The day before season. Saw one bear briefly a few days later.

It was a nice camping trip but not much of a hunt. Against my better judgment I even let my mud fiend of a wife talk me into trying an Argo trail to get to a deeper valley. Ended up stuck for the afternoon and after much winching and a ripped off bumper got back into drier country. My wife loved it, but she rides a wheeler like someone who never bought one or payed to fix one. She runs it like she stole it and then plays the “I’m just a girl “ card when it’s time to get her unstuck.

The second half we went to another area near Denali park. A high tundra and hill area with great berry patches and lots of bears. The weather really kicked our butts. Socked in with fog most of the time and steady rain intermittently switching to sleet or snow. It was cold and wet. The weeks of wet weather really made for sketchy trail conditions limiting us from some of the better areas. The one period of fairly clear weather we did glass a couple of black bear and a sow griz but they were closer to 2 thousand yards away in an area we couldn’t get to.

Finally we called it early and headed back home. I ended up taking my buddy down to Valdez to sight see and watch the sea lions eat salmon, and hike up onto a glacier. Try to salvage something of the week before he headed back to Michigan.

Alaska never gives it up easy. In my mind, no data at hand to proove it, it seems the interior is far wetter than it was when I was a kid.
