Hi All....Am having a devil of a time getting 165gr Partition to shoot well in my Ed Brown Marine Sniper rifle..24" KREIGER BBL..it groups Fed. Factory 150gr Ballistic Tips into .6" and Fed MATCH 168gr into .5" at 100 yds...so I know the rifle is capable....I started with Ramshot TAC....40gr to 44gr...and am getting 1.2" to 1.4" groups at 100yds...Also at 41gr current production WW Large Rifle primers show flatening & cratering....oh and am using Nosler cases...at 44 gr. the primers were very flat and cratered and saw gas leakage around one-half the edge of the last shot fired.........ALSO noticed that the WW primers seemed easier to seat than the CCI200 or FED 210 or 210Match I use in my 30/06....

I know...try a diff. powder...diff primer....Have IMR 4064...IMR 4895 & H4895...Viht. 140....CCI 200 & BR2...Fed 210 & Fed 210 Match primers...Nosler cases....Lapua cases....FED Match Cases....WHERE to begin...?????

ALSO..have been told that premium bbls such as Kreiger...Lilja...Shilen will show higher pressures due to their tighter dimensions than factory bbls...???
What say ye learned gentleman....??
Thanks..

Pete, my go to powder for the 308 is Varget with 150-180gr bullets. I also use CCIBR2's and WW cases. I haven't ever shot the 165 PT out of my 308, but maybe your rifle just doesn't prefer them. You can always try the 165gr AccuBond and see how that compares. Good luck. Scotty

Go with Varget or IMR4064. Of your primers I'd start and end with Fed 210M or if you run out, go with the Fed 210...probably not much difference. If you still can't get it to shoot, try the same powders with 165/168 grainers, but I doubt you will have too. Good luck!

I also forgot to mention RL15 is a good one also, just always have better luck, overall with VARGET. Scotty

What I'd do is give Ed Brown a call from my understanding they used a 1/10 twist barrel and they might point you in the right direction on reloads. Standard bore dia for 30 cal is .3000 and groove dia is .3080 and some make whats call tight bore for the 30 cal and I don't think they use one of those but you can ask them. You might want to ask them what bullet or ammo that rifle is throated for.

Myself I think that rifles more throated for a match bullet profile like the 168 etc and you should keep the ogive lenght the same as the 168gr Federal. You might be seating alittle too close with the Partition getting some high pressure from that.

Good luck

I would try Varget, RL 15 and IMR 4064, in that order. Stay with one primer and change it if you cant find an accurate load.

If this doesn't work, try the 150 gr PT. It is a tough bullet as well.

My limited experience tells me that the bore diameter of your barrel in at SAAMI minimum, being custom cut. This would cause pressure issues as well as using heavier wall military surplus brass may be an issue?

The penultimate .30-06 load since the 1950's, for 165 gr type bullets, has been 57.5 gr of IMR 4350, with a Match grade primer. This load is for commercial brass and will probably be less for Military Brass.

In my Remington Model 700 .308 (24" SPS Barrel shortened to 20") I have been using Varget with both the 165gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips and Partitions. They do not group to the same point of impact but they are within 1" of each other. Both bullet shoot right around an inch with the same powder charge.

I'd try some varget ,and play with seating depth .Don't no about your rifle but my 308 is very touchy about seating depth ,and don't be afraid to try a AccuBond or a sierra game king both excellent bullets. :)
