Help Me Downsize :)

I'd go with Hawkeyes in .223 and 7mm/08. I have both and they are very accurate, plus you wouldn't want to own a whinechester would you? :)

Wincheringen,

You need to correct your grammar. I know you meant to say, "Wouldn't you want to own a Winchester." (I took the liberty of correcting your spelling as well).

Thanks for the input guys. I'm definitely leaning toward the M70 FW in 7mm08 but unsure of the 22-250 still because of the 14 twist. I guess if it would shoot 55s accurately, I'd be ok with that. This model isn't offered in 223...debating on 6mm or 22 cal still for predators. Yesterday, I handled a Hawkeye in 22-250 but was not really impressed with the action compared to the Winchester. Pros for the M70 is the bedding, floated barrel and I like the stock design with blued barrel. The trigger is ok but the old trigger system is ok for me too as it was super easy to adjust. Not sure if the new design is an improvement or not.

Randy,
Say it isn't so.... Your selling... You need to see the doctor and fast, before the sickness gets to the advance stage... They can cure this sickness if you get treatment soon.

Was it not quite as smooth as you expected? Was that what your getting at? I got one in the MKII VT and it was a little rough outta the box but took a little lapping compound to it and it seemed to smooth it up, but still wasn't silky. After 150 rounds now she's smooth as glass.

Unless you are planning to shoot all 50-55's in the 22-250 I would look for a faster twisted rifle. I would love to have a 1-8 or so in the 22-250 to really work with the 60 grain and up bullets. My current 1-10 works fine for the 60 PT's but I would love to try the others out.

If you want the Model 70, the 243 would be a good answer and let you shoot some bullets that would get a little more wind resistance.

Call me crazy but I would opt for the Hawkeye in 7-08. I own a .308 version that will drive tacks. Granted, I own two other Hawkeyes (.270 and .338 Win Mag) and only one M70 (.243). Call me partial :) Just a side note - I've experienced consistent quarter to half minute groups from my M700 .22-250 with factory Winchester "White Box" 45 gr JHPs. I was astonished to say the least. I've come to expect it from handloads but not a factory "cheap" load. Don't use them if you're fond of pelts though. Best of luck!

usmc89 and Scott are on the right track in my book...until the major manufacturers figure out that a 14 twist is not what people want, the .223 will continue to be first choice for most varmint hunters. Once you get to 400 plus yards, the fast twist .223 with a high BC bullet leaves a 14 twist 250 with 55 grain bullets way behind. This will really sound bad to the guys that don't like the reduce inventory idea, but you could cover both bases with an 8 twist .243 or .260 and not need the 7mm-08 or the 22-250/.223

Randy,

the 22-250 with a 1:14 twist handles the new 64 gr BSB bullet. Accuracy is under MOA and terminal performance is impressive.

I am getting 3400 fps with my 85 grain handloads in the .257 Roberts. This load will kill coyotes a long way off! If I need speed, I have a .204 Ruger to provide lots of velocity.

Jim, are these bullets available from SPS or how could I get some? I have not heard of these before but sounds like they'd be great for predator/deer where legal.

The 7mm08 FW 70 is now marked off the checklist and sighted in today with 140 TTSX. 3/4" group first time shooting it w/ 200 yard zero :) Bear season starts tomorrow and I'm headed to camp in about an hour with it and my trusty M70 7mm Rem Mag with 160 Partitions. Time to finish packing the truck. Thanks for all the advice and hope to be back in about week or so depending how the hunt goes.

Since you said it would mainly be predators I'd personally go with a 243 or 6mm for the light rifle and a 6.5 Creedmoor or 260 Remington for the heavier rifle. Both offer bullets with good BC's that will shoot from the twist most factory rifles come with. I've shot alot of yotes with 22 centerfires and my little 204, but I still like the thump that the 243 or 6mm offer the best for them. I load Hodgdon superformance in my 6mm with a 24" barrel for 3924fps with a 70gr ballistic tip, that's a hammer on yotes.

I guess I am assuming by predators that you mean coyotes. If you are shooting bobcat or fox on a regular basis I'd go with a 204 for the smaller gun and one of the options listed above for the larger one. 55-75gr poly tip varmint bullets wreck bobcats in my experience. My 204 with the tougher 45gr Hornady bullets hasn't gotten a bobcat yet, but the exit wound was small on the tomcat I got so I expect it would work fine.

Oops just saw that you already had the 7mm-08 bought. Nothing wrong with that caliber either.

No fear, I've got a 204R in CZ 527 for the smaller stuff and should work pretty good on coyote using the 35 berger HP bullets. Just got back from bear hunting and saw tons of deer and turkey but no bear. I carried the 7mm08 most of the time around the creek bottoms but had the7 Rem mag for the mountain side shots....maybe next year.
