A gentleman requested a WV themed call. Only thing he asked is WV theme and native wood. I went with bead blasted crystal on top, red slate on the bottom and flamed a piece of Osage. Added the WV state motto: “Montani Semper Liberi” ( mountaineers are always free)

That’s absolutely beautiful. How does it sound?
Still to this day, Orange Osage is useful in making longbows too. It’s really dense and resists taking a bend permanently. Indians in the Appalachian’s, and Ohio Valley areas used it extensively for this. There are still bows made from hedge apple trees that are a few hundred years old. Just try and split it with an axe. Lol

It sounds great! Otherwise I’d put it on the shelf and try again. It’s a fantastic wood! You’re right about its use in bow making. In fact in French it’s "bois d'arc" literally means "wood of the bow" or "bow wood".

I’ve already got my stuff together for the opener in 4 weeks.
Last year I got into an argument with a particularly mouthy tom. I roosted him the night before. I was in early and he flew down just as the sky started getting light. I called back and forth with that thing for every bit of 3 hours. I’d try to move closer and he would walk to my right or left. I’d sit, set up and he wouldn’t move. He stayed about 100 yards out the entire morning.
I even tried backing out some and calling, and he would follow. He was my nemesis on that morning. I guess I wasn’t pretty enough for him to come and ask me on a date. That bird was a jerk! Lol
