Hornady 348 Win. Ammo

Since the Hornady ammo worked so well in Caleb's Browning M71, (see https://forum.nosler.com/threads/browning-model-71-range-report.49637/), I had two conversations with Hornady representatives this week concerning their 200 gr. FTX 348 Win. ammunition.

The first conversation was about reloading the 348 Win. cartridge. This first representative said:
  • There are no plans to produce the .348 dia. 200 gr. FTX bullets for reloading.
  • When I asked what was the commercially available powder (to reloaders) that most closely matches the powder they use in their ammunition the response was, "H-4350 for 200 grain bullets."
The second conversation with a second representative was about availability of the Hornady 348 Win. ammo. He said Hornady has no stock left at their facility, but they expect a run of it to be made in a few months - sometime in 2027.

Currently there are a few retailers, such as EuroOptics and MidwayUSA, with the Hornady ammo in stock. However, I know the EuroOptics inventory is less than 10 boxes now.
 
Reloader 19 has performed very well with 250gr and 200gr in 348 Win Win 71 (1952). Suggest stock up on 348 Win WW brass and good bullets like Hornady 200gr FN and Speer 220gr FN and Barnes Original 250gr FN.
 
Precision Cartridge made a 200 gr FTX load for the 348 Win. I had 3 boxes for my last Grade 1 Browning. Never did try it, so cannot report on how it performed. Could not find it when I just Googled it.
HSM also made a 200 gr FP load. not sure if they still list it.

Unfortunately, Hornady no longer offers the 200 gr. FN and Speer no longer offers the 220 gr. FN. Barnes does offer both a 220 gr. Original bullet and a 250 gr. Orginial bullet.

Yes, HSM still offers a 200 gr. FP load.

Unfortunately, for those of us who live in New York State, we cannot directly order ammunition. It has to be sent to a FFL holder. Plus, when we do purchase ammunition from a retailer we have to go through a background check. It is a real pain in the neck. Since the white-tail deer is the main big game (a few black bears are taken by deer hunters) hunted in NYS a lot of retailers don't stock many rifles or ammunition made for larger game such as elk, moose, and brown bear.
 
one of the guys I shot long range with bought some custom ammo to try . if I remember right the brand was "spark ammo" I don't remember much about it .
 
I was sorry to see that Hornady dropped their bullet offerings in .348 for Handloaders. It looks like we are down to Barnes and Swift for jacketed bullets.
 
Over the years I collected 3 vintage Win 71 rifles gave each to my sons for Alaskan hunting. Always used the 250gr Barnes Orginal FN and Reloader 19 for reloading the 348 Win for Bear/Moose hunting. I have vintage Redfield peep sights installed on both theirs.
 
Noticed an ad online here north of the border for a couple of boxes of Hdy 348 200 gr FP's yesterday...almost grabbed then just because...but at $120/box...
Another guy has 30 brass and wants $100 for them...or $150/50...
What the heck...may just be the reason I need to keep watching for a High Grade too!!! :devilish:
