Hornady GMX

Cool

nice BC's
Look like Speer and of course Sierra are lagging in the copper all department.

I find it interesting that Speer and Sierra are both lagging in not only the all-copper department, but also the plastic tipped department, as well as the bonded core department. Makes me wonder if they're smarter than the rest of us, or just behind the times? I will say that I think Speer bullets are sorely underestimated in terms of their accuracy potential and their on-game performance. But nothing new in many years makes me wonder how long they stay competitive?

My 30-378 blew up their HotCor 180 grn on a WT, not using those anymore on game at ulta velocities. Full jacket separation and the lead didn't even make it thro. All I found was a 27 grn peice of copper guilding metal.
I took a similar sized WT with a 200grn AccuBond and it made a trail from the ribs thro the spine and into a hind leg bond before it finally stopped penetrating.

Granted, the Speer was @ 3200FPS(100yds) on impact and the AccuBond @ 2700FPS(300yds) The velocity range was optimum for the NAB and a bit fast for the Speer, so it's not really a fair comparison. Quite accurate bullets tho, wouldn't be bad in a 30-06 or something conventional.

Speer and Sierra has the field in competition. They make the most perfect bellets for long range and excellent bullets for hunting with standard calibers. If you ever wonder how they stay in business look at the variety of bullets in weight and type per caliber. I use Sierra 60gr. BTHP in .224 cal. They have two identical bullets like that. Slight variances. That's their niche in the industry. Sierra game king bullets are the best there are (sorry Nosler) in traditional calibers (.308 Win, 30-06,270 Win. (etc). The Noslers take over from there with calibers like 300H&H . That'
s where it all started. Read up on John Nosler. They will be there for a while just like Nosler. Hornady is taking the lead comming around the turn though by diversifying. Nosler has custom rifles and ammo of superior quality and that's their niche!
Good Hunting

Poor expansion @ 2,000 ft/sec. This will make it less than ideal for the long range hunters. I believe that the Barnes TTSX will provide better expansion at lower velocity. The Barnes also have higher BC's, if you believe the published BC's. These two factors would make the TTSX a better choice for that application. I'm not sure where the E-Tips fit into this equasion.

I'm guessing that the Hornady bullets will be noticably less expensive than the Barnes which may give this new bullet a good jump-start.

I'll be very interested in seeing the early field reports. Looks like the E-Tips are already developing a loyal following and that may hinder sales of the new Hornady monolithic bullet.

On balance, I'd say they look pretty respectable, and probably worth a try, especially for folks in California. This would be especially true if the were offered at a reasonable price.

For long range shots, I think I would want to hit some big bones on the way in to initiate expansion.

Just thought id throw in my 2 cents. That test was done on a 30 cal rifle. I am not exactly for sure what kind of 30 cal but look at it like this.

My 300 RUM is still pushing over 2000 FPS at 400 yards. Thats a pretty good distance. In my opinion, this bullet would be acceptable for my 300 RUM up to 300 yards. I have mixed feelings on this bullet right now. I would like to see what it can do in the other calibers. I live next door to hornady and will be doing some testing on these bullets when thay come out in 2009.

OK You all know me (at least most do)....
I am a cynic!
That said..........

SO FOR A LAUGH, LET'S LOOK INTO THEIR LABS!

This is my idea of their engineers at work!

Speer invented the HOT CORE!!!!!!!!!

"Pouring molten hot lead into the jacket bonds them together for bullet integrity, penetration and weight retention".
Task Completed!

Sierra Gameking...invented the "Sierra Stalk" ....... Locate your game. Too close? move back and keep moving until your bullet will work AND NOT BREAK UP!!!!
Task Completed!

As far as all the other problems like all copper bullet mandatory laws, or higher BC pointed bullets, or bullets with tips on them them actually maintain integrity......... let the world conform to our 1960's technology standards.

I will be laughing in a couple of years...though I do not want to.
