I have not heard about the thickness of the jacket on the 220 gr SGK, but I know that they (Sierra) beefed up the jacket on the 215 gr 338 SGK for better weight retention and reliable penetration on larger game with the additional velocity of the 338 Win Mag. I would think that they would have done so too for the 220 gr SGK for the 8mm Rem Mag.
From what I have read about the 8mm Rem Mag over the years, most hunters were using it for moose and elk...and IIRC Boddington was using it too in his pet 8mm Rem Mag for hunting larger game.
In the 7MM STW, I had great on game performance on elk and a host of other game with the 160 gr SGK bullets, including my 7x7 elk at 475 yards, before Federal switched over to the 160 gr AB. I still have a good supply of this ammo and will still use it for elk and other large game.
I would not hesitate to use the 220 gr SGK out of the 8mm Rem Mag on an elk, even out to 500 yards.
