How far should I seat my bullet off the lands??
I have a Remington model 700 SPS in the 300 WSM. I am going to reload the 180 gr. Accubonds. I have an OAL gauge that I borrowed and was wondering what has worked well for you guys?

Thanks a ton for the info.

+1 with remingtonman,

Careful if your just borrowing the OAL Gauge. Some rounds it's possible to seat the bullet out farther than the magazine with allow. Seat a bullet, then check it in the magazine.......make sure you didn't just turn it into a single shot.

In discoverying a load for my 30-06 Ackley using 180 BT's, I did the initial load development with the bullets .005" into the lands. Once I settled on a powder charge, I took about 50 "long" loaded rounds to the range along with my press and seating die. I started shooting 3-shot groups, all the while seating deeper in .005" increments. When I hit .015" off the lands, my groups, at 300 yds, went from 5"-7" to 1.667"- 2.342".

If I were you, I'd take some kind of length comparator with you to insure your bullets are "exactly" the length you "think" they are. I use the Stoney Pt comparator.
