Have been invited to the Yukon, Canada this summer and my father took my brother to Africa for a hunt and he has promised me that he will take me, as my college graduation gift--- looking forward to both trips. ( Africa, plains game only with my father and Yukon may or may not involve hunting, but I am still looking forward to going )

Brooke

You're a rich girl, Brooke. Enjoy the Yukon and Africa. We'll all be pulling for you. Never hunted alligator; but I always thought it would be fun, just because it was different.

Thank you Dr Mike.

I owe a huge Thank you, to my father, mother, grandmother and great uncle for teaching me, supporting me, both financially and emotionally, and guiding me both literally and figuratively in the field.

I have access to a nice battery of rifles, but of course want my own. I tried the 348 and really liked it, both the caliber and the lever action. My grandmother and great uncle convined me to get the 300 H & H, which I did and do not regret it. I don't need a smaller caliber rifle here in Alaska, but have been thinking about the 257 Weatherby. I know, Dr Mike, I am sure I am the only one on the forum who owns only two rifles and is about to buy their third. Most here have a dozen of rifles and working on their second dozen or in some cases already have two dozen. For now I will have to rely on the 348, 300 H & H and if necessary a borrowed rifle. Do you like the 257 Weatherby Dr Mike ?
Brooke

Ah, yes, I remember my first dozen rifles. That was when my wife's uncle, a fellow named Boone--Dan'l Boone (ever heard of him?), was just getting ready to go west. As an aside, borrowed rifles always take the most game (kinda' like borrowed lures always catch the most fish). I do like the 257 Bee; it is a fine cartridge. I've worked up loads for several, and all shot quite well.

You aren't hurting with the rifles at your disposal. The 348 is a fine cartridge (don't let Cheyenne know that I've made such a concession, as I generally tout the .356); and the 300 H&H is definitely a classic. You are, indeed, a blessed young woman. My girls were masters of fishing. My eldest daughter shoots well enough, but she hasn't really wanted to be in the field all that much. My middle daughter was a great fishing companion who pushed me hard to catch more than she did.

Brooke - with a .300 H&H and a .348 Win, you don't really "need" anything else, but I suspect you'd be delighted with a .257 Weatherby.

If you've only shot the .300 & .348, you're in for a real nice surprise about how little a rifle can recoil, yet still provide terrific killing power... The .257 Wby, and the slightly less powerful .25-06, are fine examples of smallish bore, light recoiling, very lethal hunting rifles.

Oh, for a LOT of years I hunted with two rifles, a .30-06, and a 6mm Remington... Honestly, I can't think of any game I've taken over the years that couldn't have been taken, well, with those two...

Regards, Guy

It's great to see such a wide variety of animals hunted and depth of experience in those here.

I can only hope that your adventures, memories and shared experiences with family and friends has been as rich as mine!

May all your future hunts and adventures continue to be as rewarding!

I'm with Guy there. A .257, 300 magnum and 348 would cover just about any ground...

My little brother loves his 257 Weatherby. Very capable with 120 Partitions.

Not to get off topic but SJB is right about the 257 Weatherby. I have taken 3 whitetail with it using 120 grain Partitions and it hits like Thor's hammer!

yeah, Dr Mike, I do remember that fellow. lol

Brooke, I am pleased to see you are considering my suggestion young lady. As I already mentioned to you, I have one and love it and believe you would also be very happy with owning and hunting with one. As the fellows have said it works very well with the 120 Partition, although that is not what I use. Your uncle can work you up a good load for it, good luck on your canoe trip this summer.

As I mentioned before, I feel blessed to have been in a position to have hunted on several continents with my husband over the years. We were able to hunt all the major big game animals in Africa, Europe, North America, and New Zealand. We hunted South America but usually for birds and btw if any of you fellows like bird hunting, it doesn't get much better than it does in South America.

I did notice that some animals were mentioned that we did not hunt--walrus, rhino, marco polo, as an example and I wish we had, but at my age, those hunts will have to wait until my next life time.

If no one minds I will go a little different way here and tell you that my favorite hunts, were Red Stag in New Zealand, Fox Hunting, horseback in Ireland, Buffalo and Leopard hunting in Africa, Elk hunting in Arizona, and Moose and Bear in Alaska. And of course bird hunting in Argentina. Most of my favorite hunts were my favorite for reasons that did not necessarily involve the animal hunted, but the circumstances of the hunt, the people we were hunting with, or the "hunt" itself.

I miss my husband, a lot, and not just because I have nobody to do my honey do's but hunting stories or thoughts of hunting stories does make me a little melancholy, sorry about that. carry on

You are a blessed woman, April, to have shared that aspect of life with your husband. We men should encourage our wives and daughters to share our passionate pursuit of the outdoors, if only to share a favourite part of life with those we love.
