As a teacher getting time off in the fall can be hard so I am always looking for different hunts. Can you think of any hunts during the non teaching season? Bow or rifle works

I did a wy antelope hunt a few summers ago and enjoyed it and would do it again but I would take someone with and not go solo.

Around here we hunt goats and sheep in August but that won't help you. We have one area we can hunt deer from June to end of February there has to be areas like that in the U.S. as well. The antelope hunt you mention would be awfully fun.

We have crop damage deer hunting in July and Aug. A great opportunity to test Nosler bullets in a target rich environment.
Might be worth looking into.

I would be all over that, summer time deer are fantastic eating, have shot blacktails in the Queen Charlottes in June and August and they were great.

You are right Gerry.
All you need is a bottle of water and some bug spray.
Last month I was thinking about hunting in jeans and a t shirt as I lit the heater in the blind.

Bear season opens August 1st in most of Washington. Makes for a good spot and stalk hunt. Over the counter tags and a good population of color phase bears make it attractive.

There is always something to hunt in Africa and if you stay away from the big five it can be less expensive than hunting brown bears in Alaska or Russia for a non resident.

The air fare is the most expensive part of hunting doves in Argentina and that is a fun time if you like wing shooting, plus Argentina has some great big game hunts, even Red Stag and great fishing to boot

speaking of Red Stag, try New Zealand and take your wife, if you have one, as New Zealand is an enjoyable place to visit for non hunters also. Red Stag ends at the end of July, but Tahr and Chamois are available to hunt in any of the three months you are off work

turkey on the Mexico yucatan, however Mexico is not as safe as it once was

There is one early season hunt ( late august ) in Romania for Carpathian Chamois,

Contact Cheyenne, yukon huntress as I think there is several different species to hunt in those months. Possibly true also for British Columbia.

As has been mentioned hogs in Texas, plus it gives you a chance to air out your lever gun

If your single, take a cruise through the Caribbean and go cougar hunting,

You're in rare form this morning, Aleena!

WT, I can only add various other locations for hog hunting, as well as some summer coyote thinning. Or, if you're just interested in some camaraderie and shooting, you could do a prairie dog shoot on a campout somewhere in the western states.

When is bird season in SD? Might be an early opportunity to get after a few ringnecks if the timing is right. Or, if heat doesn't bother you, nor a reasonable chance of snakes and potentially alligators, you could hunt archery season for deer and turkey down in south Florida. The birds down there are Osceolas, so it would at least be a cool, slightly less common subspecies. You might even catch a glimpse of a Florida Panther in the wild, which would be a cool, rare sighting. My dad and brother saw one many, many years ago, while sitting in an elevated box blind hunting deer. My brother still talks about it and my dad did right up until his death in 2003. I believe they saw it in the 70s.

As one other option, there are mid- to late-August alligator hunts at night in Florida. There are some requirements for training completion and such, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibilities, I believe. I'm not sure what's required of a non-resident, so reaching out to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission would be wise.

I am thinking that in some western states, archery elk or deer may start in late August.

Shooting p-dogs would be fun. I would have to find someone to go with or meet up with. The WA bear would be cool. What are the success rates on spot and stalk for a week of hunting? The herd control hunt in MI sounds sweet also. It is most likely not going to happen this summer but I want to start looking for the summer of 2014 to do something. Please keep the info coming and if you are interested in hunting together please let me know. I am in my early 30's and am willing to try new places to hunt. Like I mentioned before the archery hunt in WY was cool but I did it alone and would enjoy some company next time I hunt out of state.

Check these guys out.
A buddy of mine.

Gotta warn you though, Texas heat in the summer is not for the faint of heart.
On the other hand, I'd freeze to death up there walking out to get the mail.

WT,
Pheasant dosent start 'til october. Get yourself a good air rifle- there's gophers, ferral pigeons, starlings and such. Not much forthe freezer, but you can scratch your itchy trigger finger. gotta be a trap league and some long range competitions you can get to. CL

Dubyam, we hunted Alligators in Louisiana and enjoyed it, that is a good suggestion for WT

If we are only dong the States, the only three states I have any knowledge off is Texas, Arizona, and Alaska, as Jerry is a U.S. citizen. Besides hogs in TX, the Rattlesnake hunt in Sweetwater was a lot of fun and I enjoyed eating them as well . However from memory that is in the spring. Alaska has year round black bear hunting in some units, and in Arizona, you can hunt Turkey, Black Bear, Lion and Buffalo during the time you are off. I think the Buffalo hunt is bow only this early. Texas and Arizona are hot in the summer and Alaska has a mosquito or two in the summer.

If its shooting you want to do, and not necessarily hunting, join the Cowboy circuit. This also gives you the opportunity to buy a few more guns. Jerry really loved these get togethers, it can be a lot of fun. Jerry liked the CMSA a lot, but then you have to buy yourself a horse. I liked the quick draw and the square dancing. But even though you are not hunting, your around like minded people, and shooting and talking about firearms.

I would like to get out and shoot prairie dogs or something like that soon. Hog hunting is available, but I'm allergic to the heat that most of the places have during that time of the year!

"The WA bear would be cool. What are the success rates on spot and stalk for a week of hunting?"

Mediocre.

Success rates in general for bear hunting in Washington hover around 8% - 9% as I recall, but that figure may simply take into account the number of deer and elk hunters who get a bear tag just in case they bump into one while hunting.

My experience is limited. Did real well on one hunt when my son, a friend and I all took bears within 24 hours, and two were down within 10 minutes and 500 yards of each other.

On the other hand I've spent a week glassing and spotting, but unable to seal the deal with a tagged bear for various reasons.

FWIW, Guy

What about the ID hunt in the spring for bear? I think it ends on June 15. I could hunt the last week of the season if I haul tail out there.

In California, the coastal zone (A-zone) for archery black tail begins in mid-July and runs through mid-August. I have never hunted the coastal zones. I am fairly sure that most of the coast is private property but there are a fair amount of guides for this area if you are looking for a guided hunt. On the guided hunts, success is very good.

Archery season for the Sierras and the eastern foot hills begin in mid-August and depends on which zone a person hunts. In apposition to the coast, there is a lot of public access in the sierras. Success rates for the D-zones that I hunt are around 7-9%. Some how, I have shot 5 deer over the last 6 years. I should have taken home a deer last year, but I was greedy and wanted a nice 4x4 that I had seen but never had a shot at.

If I were coming way out West to the coast I would take a hard look at Oregon. Archery season starts at about the third week of August and runs into September. Not sure when you head back to the classroom, but an archery elk hunt on the coast would be fun. I am glad that I don't teach anymore :) . Good luck.
