How many of you guys hunt with buckshot? I have shot one blacktail doe with my Baikal single shot 12 gauge that my dad bought me for my first gun, it was a bang flop. Used a Winchester 2 3/4" 00 buck 9 pellet load, next year I hope to deer hunt with the same gun again. Just bought some Remington 000 buck loads today to pattern.

I shot 1 WT deer with 00 Buck, it was a bang flop kill.

Used them in Greece when stationed there for wild boar. They work well enough when up close./

I will summon Woodycreek as he has taken alot of deer with buckshot and has been around alot of it. It is deadly when used right and I gotta think that Hevi-Shot buckshot is unreal.

I lost a good buck a long time ago with buck and it soured me. Not against it totally, but rifles hold much more appeal in the deer hunting area. Scotty

I shot a nice buck in archery season one year that had buckshot in its neck. It had healed over into big lumps of tissue. After seeing that, I would never use buckshot on a whitetail. They are a tough animal.

I used Buckshot on deer for almost 30 years and killed truckloads of deer with it. It should work well if you keep your shots at 40-50 yards with 00 or 000 in a tight shooting shotgun. I have killed deer much farther than that. More than a few at 60-65 yards and one at over 70 yards. But the kills are not as clean when you go past 50 yards. I prefer 3 1/2" 00 Hevishot since it hits harder and penetrates better than lead. The 45-70 has seen more use in the thick stuff than the shotgun this year.

The one blacktail doe I mentioned was small but all the pellets exited one pellet broke the front shoulder and penetrated the heart, was quite impressed.

PATTERN YOUR GUN WITH EVERY SHOT SIZE YOU WILL USE. 00 and 000 usually shoot best out of a modified or Improved cylinder bore. Keep your shots inside 50 yards and it is very deadly. I used #4 buck Rem. 2 3/4" Baby Mag with 34 pellets in a Rem 1100 that had a 30" fixed full choke barrel (this was the only shot size and load that shot tight) to kill a bunch of deer with. It shot very tight patterns, out to 60 yards you could put 3/4 of the shot in the vitals of a deer and they did not go very far leaking all that blood.

I have shot 2-5 deer a year in VA with buckshot while running deer with dogs. Goochland County is a no slugs or rifle county. Buckshot is good for deer killing, just keep it under 40 yards. I have a benelli SBE 3 1/2 12 gauge but use only 3 inch shells 00 buck. Cheaper and more than enough to get the job done.
