Day after Thanksgiving. Rifle Doe Season. I mentioned at breakfast about taking the two oldest out for an afternoon sit. Both girls lit up and jumped up and down with excitement. Allie ( 4 year old) is gonna be quite the little outdoorswoman. She helped me skin out my 8pt this year, and I am talking grabbing hide, fat, bloodshot, etc.. and actually using a knife, supervised of course. The whole time she keeps saying " daddy this meat smells delicious". When I boiled the head the next day for a Euro mount she kept telling everyone how we were having "deer head" for dinner .
Anyway we took off about 2:30 and I loaded up the doghouse blind, two campchairs, my .270 stoked with 150gr ABLR's and Mackenzies Red Ryder. She wanted to take "her gun" and I said yes under the condition that she carry it the whole way out and back. It is about 1/2 mile walk to where we were gonna set up so I loaded everything on a game cart and we took off. Wearing there snow boots the girls did pretty good, you can see it in their faces ( which are still red) after we got set up:
We settled in for the afternoon show. At around 3:30 a flight of snow geese lifted off the refuge to the south of us and for a good 45 minutes we had a solid horde of geese overhead. It was a pretty cool sight. Around 4pm we lost Allie. Sleep won.
At 4:30 I heard crunching to the west in the woods and I slowly brought the .270 up. Out of the corner of my eye I caught movement and saw that Mackenzie was bringing the Red Ryder up, shaking like a leaf the whole way. Needless to say she had the fever! It ended up being a squirrel, but it was exciting nonetheless. The sun set at 5;15 and we packed up and headed out. I was very happy with Mack as she carried the RR the whole way at port arms and never covered either Allie or I with the barrel.
Along the way out we stopped and listened to some coyotes off in the distance, used our flashlights to look at deer tracks, and even heard an owl.
As we pulled out onto the gravel road Mackenzie says " Daddy.... you're the best". I swear a piece of dirt somehow got in my eye at just that same time.
All in all a great day even though the deer won this one. I believe I have two hunters in the making and when Mack turns 6 on Dec 17th of this year, she is legal in Missouri. I believe after the holidays it is time to get her shooting something that burns powder....
