Day after Thanksgiving. Rifle Doe Season. I mentioned at breakfast about taking the two oldest out for an afternoon sit. Both girls lit up and jumped up and down with excitement. Allie ( 4 year old) is gonna be quite the little outdoorswoman. She helped me skin out my 8pt this year, and I am talking grabbing hide, fat, bloodshot, etc.. and actually using a knife, supervised of course. The whole time she keeps saying " daddy this meat smells delicious". When I boiled the head the next day for a Euro mount she kept telling everyone how we were having "deer head" for dinner :D .

Anyway we took off about 2:30 and I loaded up the doghouse blind, two campchairs, my .270 stoked with 150gr ABLR's and Mackenzies Red Ryder. She wanted to take "her gun" and I said yes under the condition that she carry it the whole way out and back. It is about 1/2 mile walk to where we were gonna set up so I loaded everything on a game cart and we took off. Wearing there snow boots the girls did pretty good, you can see it in their faces ( which are still red) after we got set up:

We settled in for the afternoon show. At around 3:30 a flight of snow geese lifted off the refuge to the south of us and for a good 45 minutes we had a solid horde of geese overhead. It was a pretty cool sight. Around 4pm we lost Allie. Sleep won.

At 4:30 I heard crunching to the west in the woods and I slowly brought the .270 up. Out of the corner of my eye I caught movement and saw that Mackenzie was bringing the Red Ryder up, shaking like a leaf the whole way. Needless to say she had the fever! It ended up being a squirrel, but it was exciting nonetheless. The sun set at 5;15 and we packed up and headed out. I was very happy with Mack as she carried the RR the whole way at port arms and never covered either Allie or I with the barrel.

Along the way out we stopped and listened to some coyotes off in the distance, used our flashlights to look at deer tracks, and even heard an owl.

As we pulled out onto the gravel road Mackenzie says " Daddy.... you're the best". I swear a piece of dirt somehow got in my eye at just that same time.

All in all a great day even though the deer won this one. I believe I have two hunters in the making and when Mack turns 6 on Dec 17th of this year, she is legal in Missouri. I believe after the holidays it is time to get her shooting something that burns powder....

Pat, I must be reading this in a dirty room. I believe some dirt got into my eyes, just as it did in yours. Course, I'm remembering back to my girls and my son going out fishing with me. Man, that story is great. I'm smiling from ear to ear, just imagining the pride and joy you are experiencing for about the thousandth time. Congratulations, Dad.

My friend the deer might have taken the 1st. round but you won by a Knockout!!!
What a great way to spend the afternoon with 2 beautiful young ladies!!!
Thank you for the photos & story. You have started something very special with your 2 girls!!
Be proud Dad!!

Blessings,
Dan

Great story, it looks to be a lot of fun hunting with your girls. Congrats on a wonderful outing.

Great day afield Pat, I know I've said it before, but those days with the kids in the woods have to be the top of the heap for me. Your raising a pair of great kids. Hopefully those two girls skip school to deer hunt when they are old enough. That's an excuse I could live with as a parent! Way to go Hornet!

I believe there is another waiting in the wings? Isn't there a younger sister just waiting to join you, Pat? I do enjoy your accounts of time with the girls.

Yes you are correct Dr. Kendall turns 1 on Jan 4th. She will most definetly join us some day. Hopefully in two years her big sister Mack will already have a deer under her belt.

Thanks for the kind words fellas. They sure are a ball to take out. All the questions, giggles, and funny looks are 100 times better than shooting a deer... unless of course they are the ones pulling the trigger. That day will be unreal.

Pat,

Its only going to get better buddy!
Just wait and see. ;)

Pat,
This story is
A W E S O M E ! ! !
I was blessed enough to have my four year old daughter along with us for our antelope hunt this year and it was a hoot. Life is good bud, congratulations on a great day afield.

Great story!
I'd be lying if I didn't say I envy them. You have a beautiful family. Merry Christmas!
