Went hunting yesterday into an area I haven't been before. More of a wheeler ride into the Northern Idaho Rockys. Sorry no pics - rain and fog most of the day.
Really nice country, saw deer and one cow elk.
Well, after my wife and I ate a snack and a cup of coffee we started the wheeler and I only made it ten feet and she starting beating me on the back and shoulder.
I thought she had a bee in her underwear or something. Couldn't understand a thing coming out of her mouth.
I finally realized she wanted me to get off the wheeler and she blurts "Just shoot that huge Buck". So like it is in the mountains, I can see forever in 3 directions and start scanning to figure out what she is so excited about. I finally see movement up the trail on the next point about 250 -300 yds away. My eyes ... I can't see what a deer is that far with brush as the back ground. My son says "Spike ... Doe .... small 4pt " , he is looking thru his scope ready for a shot. Now I did see 5 deer. My wife says the one that was facing us below the road was huge bodied and had a big rack. " My response " You could see a rack at this distance?" "Well yea it was big and especially after he went down and then back to the road on the point"
I just sigh .... Let's go see. Now she has just started hunting with me as of 5 years ago and and killed deer each year. So she is still pretty new to this. So we drive over to the next point and I'm looking at the deer tracks in the trail and at the point I see tracks coming onto the trail and I say "Holy crap women, this deer is the size of a horse and you couldn't shoot!!!"
These are tracks that I only see every other year or so but not seen the animals that make them.. HUGE. We talked about communicating better as opposed to doing the bee in the underwear freak out thing. She understands now that when an opportunity like that presents it's self, communication is paramount and not to wait for me. I told she just needs to make sure it's safe and get me out of the way to take a shot. These opportunities don't come very often. We will be back in mid Nov when visibility is better and colder out. So maybe next time.
