I just got back from a deer hunting trip to east NC. I took two deer with my T/C Contender and new MGM made SS 14" barrel in 30-30AI. I was using the 125 Nosler Ballistic Tip pushed to 2670 fps average by 33 grs IMR 4198 in a WW case fired by a Wolf LR primer. Opening day, last Sat, I took a doe at 98 yards broad side. Bullet struck in the center of her front shoulder and exited at the back edge of the offside shoulder with a golf ball size hole. Doe dropped in her tracks. Wednesday afternoon I took a nice 7 point buck at 55 yards. I was hunting on an old logging road and he came out of the woods on one side and kept walking across the road and had his head into the woods on the other side before I could squeeze the shot off. The bullet struck just a little bit lower on the front shoulder than I like. He jumped about 3 feet up in the air and jerked his front legs up close to his body and kicked out his back legs and hit the ground running. He only went 30 yards and piled up. The bullet blew his heart to pieces and exited the offside where the leg bone meets the shoulder place and broke the leg with a golf ball size exit. I have used the 125 ballistic tip in a 308 and 30X47 HBR rifle to take deer also and it is a real deer killer.

Nice job
Good looking buck
I spent years hunting with Contenders
It really is much more satisfying when you drop game with a handgun and I think it makes you a better rifle hunter.
When is the BBQ at you house?

1Shot,

Congratulations on your successful handgun hunt.
The 30-30AI is a hammer on deer. Way to go!

Nice job! My buddy George Samaras killed an American Bison with the same setup. 30-30 and 125 BT.

Congrats on your success. Always nice to see someone else out there using a Contender. What did you use to rest your pistol on?

I hunt out of a 4'X4' shooting house on a logging road between two cut-overs. The road is only as wide as a pick up truck to pass down without having brush hit it. I mounted a piece of plywood 10" wide and 18" long on the 2x4 ledge of the window and stack two sand bags to rest the forearm on and a small sandbag to rest the grip on. I can just set the pistol up on the sand bags and have it point down the road and it will stay there. It is really solid.

Congrats on a couple well placed shots! You are really getting the fever going for me to get out in the woods. Two weeks until things get started here...can't wait.

That is some great shooting! I have a bunch of 125gr Sierra's loaded right now for my 308 that my wife uses for hunting. Light recoil and they perform really well at about 3000FPS. I will switch over the 125gr BT's when I can find some of them. With all the great reports, I bet they would be dynamite also. Plus, they just look better than the Sierra's! Scotty

CONGRATS.

Ah yes the mighty .30-30AI with 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. Yes it is a deadly combination for sure. I have used that cartridge with that bullet myself a time or two and my cousin still uses the .30-30 AI with 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips. I have yet to find a Deer that can walk away from a good hit from a .30-30AI with a 125gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip. A very under-rated cartridge & load in my opinion.

Congrats once again, you done good.

Larry
