When waiting for a barrel to cool down, especially on a hot day, i got the idea to hurry the cooling process up a bit.
I bought one of those pumps by Coleman and fastened about a three foot piece of plastic hose to the part that normally fits onto the air mattress. Four "D" cells power the thing. It's easonably cool heere in Tucson this time of year so it does a real fast job incooling down the barrel. In the summer at 100 plus degrees in the shade, it does take longer but still helps cool the gun down. It seems to work a bit faster if i put the gun in a rack, muzle up and use the pump. Must be some kind of chimney effect or something. I have though of running the hose through a small ice chest, sealing the holes with silicone and have the hose inside covered with ice. I'm not too sure if that might cuase a condensation problem inside the bore or not. I'd only use that during the hottest part of the year. I do have one rifle that has a defective barrel and shoots patterns. maybe once I get my gadget put together, I'll shoot it to get it really hot and see what happens. can't hurt that one and it's slated to be rebareled anyway. Just have to wait for summer to get here.

Not a bad idea. A buddy used a cylinder of compressed air that was cooled. Not sure what type of gas though.

I know people that blow CO2 through the barrel to facilitate cooling. It does seem to work.

I have also heard of people rubbing the outside of the barrel down with rubbing alcohol. As it evaporates it cools the barrel :?

CO2? Think of global warming! What about the children? (Yea, there is a need for a sarcasm font.)

CO2 to feed the plants, without which we would have an O2 deficit! If you care about the environment, you'll blow CO2 through your rifle and shoot more at the range. (Sarcasm font was used throughout.)

Good stuff, Doc. I never could understand the whole 'CO2 is a greenhouse gas' line of thinking. Just plant more trees!
