Here is what I sent my gunsmith:

Dear Ed,

I am one frustrated man. Now you know that I can nurse accuracy out of a rifle that some people can't get out of the same rifle. I usually do not like a rifle that does not shoot like I want it to. I get rid of it. Well this is the first rifle that does not shoot like I want it to, yet, I really do like this rifle. I like how it handles, feels in my hands and how it comes up to my shoulder so natural. I have sent you links to four of my targets that demonstrate what has been happening over 369 rounds fired through this rifle. The targets represent 150gr, 165gr 180gr and 220gr. As you will notice no matter what weight bullet I put through this rifle these targets represent what has been happening. No matter what primers, powder, OAL, brass or bullets I use this is what I get.

Now I love the rifle and I love a 30-06, so what do you think this rifle needs? Would a bedding job do the trick?

I have a gospel meeting to preach in Arizona the end of Sept. and will go bear hunting starting Oct. 2-10th. If I do not get this 06 right I will have to hunt only with my 358Win and that limits me to 275yds without hold over and 360yds if at 280yds I put the cross hairs on top the shoulder.

With those two and one type groups - I'd suspect bedding will help. As long as everything else has already checked out. The two bullets virtually on top of each other provide a glimpse of what the rifle can do...

I agree. Have you considered pillar bedding?

No, sure haven't and I would not know how to do it anyway.

Well, guess I better learn how to bed or pillar bed a rifle. Man, I sure hope I do not mess it up or make it worse than it is. I am a shooter, reloader, hunter, but not a gunsmith. Need to save money, so I guess I will try one of the two. Got to figure out which one would be easier for me to do.

I have glasses to read with

WHAT IS ACRAGLASS AND HOW DO YOU USE IT???????????

It is bedding compound. Brownells sells it and other places

I found some, now I am going to read about how to use it and then order it.

Little confusion here, which should I use, Agraglass or Agraglass Gel??????

Make sure you read up on bedding a ruger as the recoil lug is angled and may cause you some grief when it comes time to separate the stock during the operation to give you a stress free bedding job.

Bullet- Bedding is not that hard but it is time consuming and maticuless work. Don't get me wrong it is well worth it. If I remember right there was a thread on here a while ago that had several good step by step pictures. The guy wasn't useing acraglass but the process is the same. I hear that the rugers like to have a very small amount of space between the tang of the action and the stock. When I am bedding a rifle and need some space in a particular area I use some duct tape. If I'm bedding the whole forearm I'll put two or three layers of duct tape and this creats my freefloat when I'm done. I also tape off the sides and the bottom of the recoil lug so the the only thing touching is the trigger side of the recoil lug. I would only go one or two layers of tape thick on that part. Use molding clay to keep the bedding compound out of areas that you don't want it to get, and cover everything with release agent, or clear kiwi shoe polish so that your rifle doesn't stick to the action. Bad things can happen if your action gets stuck to your stock!

Kind of a breif overview for ya. If you have an older "truck", or "ranch" gun laying around practice on it first. The first one never turns out perfect. The hardest part of bedding a rifle is getting over the thought that you might mess it up and not getting in too big of a hurry. Most anything you mess up you can take back out with a dremmal tool.

Alright, you guys have sealed it up for me!!!!!!!!!

"I AIN'T BEDDING MY RIFLE - SOMEBODY ELSE IS GOING TO DO IT - I AM NOT MESSING UP MY RIFLE" !!!!!

bedding is a piece of cake.
I have done dozens. BTW Did you try the credit card / freefloating trick?

Yes I did but it was worse but I attribute that to the credit card moving to much. I put a shim (four thickness of duck tape) under the barrel just in front of where it is screwed into the receiver. It lifted the barrel and freed it from the stock all the way down to where I put the shim.

I will shoot it and see if there is any improvement and if so I will have it floated. I would prefer it bedded and floated. If it does improve when I shoot again, it will be a while before I can have it done because of job and money being tight at the moment. I will have to depend on the 358Win and that is not all that bad considering how it shoots.

That will work. Also so will a neoprene washer to lift the barrel.

POP, I will let you know how it shoots with the barrel floated. Thanks for helping.
