I have never owned a spotting scope, so tell me if this is possible. I want to see the hole in the paper at 200yds. from a 22-250 cal. Can it be done? How far out is possible? Brand names and powers would help me. I live way south of Bill Gates so price does matter some.

Start saving up. Glass is available that does what you want, but you better have decent vision and save some dough, because it takes both.

I have a US made redfield 20-60 power. Excellent glass for a 1990's made product. Then it was the top of the line and listed for $500. I can see holes at 300 yards.

Optics is one area where, as a general rule, the more you can afford to spend, the better. But, what looks good to my eye, might not to yours. You need to look through as many scopes as possible. On the other hand, it's difficult to find people willing to let you borrow high $$ optics, take them to the range, and try them out. There is the dilemma.

I've dealt with this company several times, and found them to be very straight with me. Ask for Doug.

I've only dealt with these people once, but I had a good experience.

The big names to look at are Leica, Swarovski, and Zeiss. But now there are some other great companies out there building some excellent quality glass for less money. That's why I would recommend doing as much research as possible.

Another thought is check out the bird watching sights. Those folks put a lot of time and effort into finding the best optics. I've learned a lot researching binoculars on the birdwatching sites.

Good Luck and most importantly have fun!

Jay,

It's all about optics. It may not be the most expensive but it must be good. The Guru's of shooting say that you should spent more on the optics than on the gun. Of course Swarovski, Zeiss and top end Leupold are the given in quality but some of the Nikon or Pentax scopes will do as well. The best spotting scope I bought cheap was a Tasco of 1980 vintage. The new ones aren't worth your hard earned money. The Bushnells are only ok at the very top end. Cabela's has some great for the money. Burris has excellent quality and it won't mug your pocket book. Decide how much you can spend and then spend half again more and be really happy!
Good Hunting

I looked at some of the birder sites, thanks, hadn't thought of that. Read alot of reviews. Now I'm leaning toward a Pentax 80 ED with angled veiw. I'm thinking angle veiw is better for shooting prone. ? I've picked up enough cans now I'm just shopping for price, and wishing for spring.
Thanks.
PS. I also learned make sure the eyepiece
is included in the price listed.
Jay.

I'm sure the Pentax ED 80 will be an excellent choice. I've also noticed many prone match shooters use the angled versions. Good idea! Have fun and Merry Christmas!
