I'm trying to shave some weight from a model 70 ultimate shadow....right now the scope that is on it is a Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x50 30 mm tube, matte finish. It has the bigger duplex with illuminated dot in the center that can turn on or off. It's in excellent condition....and it is a really good scope overall. The dot is so very nice that you can turn on and adjust the intensity. It's just too much size and weight for this particular platform. I told my son you don't want such a beast on this lightning fast rifle, but what do Dad's know. I'm trying to get an idea on how much he could sell this for. Also, if anyone is interested on this please let me know that too.

I've narrowed down on two scopes for him...a Zeiss 3-9 or a Minox 2-10x40

Please post away...and thanks in advance for any and all opinions...particularly if anyone has first hand experience on the minox

P.s. The caliber on this particular 70 is a 25 WSSM.

I have recently purchased both those makes of scopes.
The Zeiss is a Conquest & the Minox is a ZA-5.
Both the scopes use the same glass company & the Minox is considerably cheaper.
I would be hard pressed to pick one over the other for clarity so I guess I would take
the Minox because it is cheaper in price.

PS. Both of ours have 1" tubes:)!!

Blessings,
Dan

I've had the same thoughts recently. It's why my lightweight '06 just got a 2-7 VX2 Leupold instead of a VX-R or a higher magnification Minox or Zeiss.

Of the two scopes your considering, I would much rather have the Zeiss. However, if you want a good quality scope that is small and lighweight, why not try the Leupold VX3 in 2.5-8 power? It is a 1" tube scope and is pretty compact while still having Leupold VX3 optical quality, it only has a 36mm bell in front and can be mounted in low rings in most cases.

I've had a number of Conquest scopes, and still have a few mounted on rifles I use. I've only had one Minox, though I've handled a few. Quality wise, they are equivalent. At the moment, the Minox may be the better value due to price incentives.

I have a Minox ZA-5 in 2-10x40 and it has a couple of advantages over Conquest, those being light wieght and a long set eye relief. I also have the Conquest and the Minox is lighter despite being about the same overall size. I like the Conquest and it is a tough scope (I just put one on a 9.3x74R) but for a light rifle, I would choose the Minox.

Fixed 6x Leupold with the 36mm objective. Mounts nice and low. Lightweight. Generous "eye box" and an all-around good scope.

If low light performance is more important, go for the 42mm version.

...I'd go here, but put a 4.5X14 VX-3 on that .25 WSSM, make a fine "off-season chuck rifle", I'd skip the CDS since I use both light bullets for pdawgs & heavy bullets for mule deer, maybe look @ a "varmint reticle", a deer @ 15yds. still fits in the scope on low power, I've checked it off the porch...

You can get mulitple dials for the CDS system. You can have them hand tailored for different BCs and velocities and then just swap them over.

I know a lot of people really enjoy the Minox and they appear to be great scopes for the money.

And excellent customer service!

Well, I have a handful of the Conquest scopes, and I really like them, but the really aren't that light. I would be tempted to go with Leupold VX2 3-9x40 or 4-12x40, VX3 3.5-10x40 or either of the fixed 6x; Swaro Z3 3-9x36 or 3.5-10x42; or either of the Mentioned Minox scopes... ZA3 3-9x40 or ZA5 2-10x42 (?).

I have the VX3 2.5-8x36 on my 'lightweight' rifle. Its plenty for deer and the VX3 glass certainly makes you think its a much higher power scope.

Thanks for the thoughts so far....

I own a VXIII 2.5-8 ...great scope....It is actually mounted on a Model 141 35 remington. To be honest I can't say anything negative about this scope other than I wish it went just a tick higher on the upper end of the power....we hunt a lot of open country and every digit of power can be crucial.
I've also owned a few VXIII 4.5-14 40mm.... another great scope...and Leupold overall can never be associated with anything negative. I have experience with zeiss, swarovski, burris, Kahles, and of course the lower end of things tasco, bsa, simmons...

Swarovski and Kahles are out for this application because he will never fetch the money from his current scope to even get close...but the conquest he could get close and these Minox really intrigue me.

I'm pretty happy with the 2-10 Minoxs. I drowned mine this past weeks, bumped it quite a lot and it seems to have taken it all in stride. Glass is nice and once the dials are tightened down they dial very nice for me.

Scotty,

You need to give us a full report of your journeys out west.

What reticle do you have...what rifle are they on.....and how is the balance?

I have two 3x9's, one with a #4 one with a BDC. They are on a 35 Whelen and 7mm Mauser. Then I have 3, 2-10's. two with a plex and one with a BDC. The two with the Plex are on a 25-06 and my 338 Win Mag. The BDC was on my 338 and is currently without a rifle. I like them all. My only real complaint is the Field of View is a little smaller that a Conquest but still very good glass and I trust them. They haven't let me down yet.

I own both. I give the Minox high marks for clarity, cost and long eye relief. I give the Conquest high marks for contrast, build quality and toughness (against recoil). For the money, I would by the Minox ZA-5, 2-10x40. I like the ZA-5 that I have very well and it shoots under 1/4 MOA on my .30-06 Model 70. The only thing that I do not like about Minox is their wimpy retical in the ZA-5 but I can overlook that for the price.
