Idaho bear from this week

That would be a lovely bear, to be sure. I do enjoy the diversity of coat colours noted in differing areas.

Here in Washington, I saw a blonde bear a few years ago with chocolate legs in the back of a guy's truck. It was absolutely gorgeous! Last year I had a permit for a unit in western Washington that is about 10 minutes from my house. I saw one chocolate bear in a basin for about 15 seconds. Hunted that basin, and surrounding area the rest of the season but never saw it again. This year my buddy shot a chocolate in that same basin that could be a twin to my Idaho bear. His first Chocolate bear in all his years of hunting.

I also have friends that hunt Western Montana and they seem to do well on color phase bears, with about 50% of therir harvest being chocolate colored.

The problem here with bears that are coloured other than black is that they are shot even though quite young. A colour-phase bear simply won't live long enough to get much size. One that did have some size that I encountered on one occasion, was exceptionally wary of people. He was as large as a mountain grizzly. He had a reddish coat. However, the moment he became aware that I had ventured around a corner into the meadow where he was grazing, he bolted for the tall timber. Nary a shot at that big boy. I'm guessing he had encountered hunters on other occasions and was not taking any more chances.

Good bear and story Lefty! I would "expect" a Marine to continue the hunt even when sick, ha. My Msgt Marine son in law is a pleasure to hunt with because he "never complains"...and I "know" his knee is shot, ha. He is "almost" as good a shot as his "Army" father in law!

Preacher, on Memorial Day I won't debate the marksmanship skills of a Marine vs Soldier as I'm sure your daughter told him to let you win

Thanks for the compliment and happy Memorial Day!!
