Ideal Elk Rifle

I doubt any of my elk rifles will shoot that well, but then again they'll be a lot easier to carry. That rifle should hammer those elk though. Nice shooting .300wm!

Appreciate it, fella's!

Taylorce1, It is not a fun rifle to pack, I'll admit that. However, it is good incentive to stay in shape and when you get past 600 yards, the weight comes in handy! Plus, with the weight and muzzle brake, once you get to 400 or 500 yards and further, you can spot your own shots; which can be very useful. My last barrel would hold about 5" groups at 800 yards consistently and accounted for 3 elk DRT past 600 yards. I wish I could lighten it up and get the same performance. I'll have to build a new rifle to do that. . . shucks

300win, that is a very impressive group  someone told me or I read somewhere that the 300win mag has the most entries in B & C in the last 10 years and I can see why ! I was wondering you mentioned that you had a custom barrel. Could you give us a break down on what you had done on that rig of yours?

Blessings,
Dan

Thanks Dan!

My rifle has the following components:

Remington 700 LASS
28" 1-9" twist Hart Barrel Hunter BR contour (.750" @ Muzzle)
McMillan A3 stock w/adjustable cheek piece
Jewell Trigger set @ 1 lb
Tubb's Recoil Lug
1" Limbsaver
Nesika 20 MOA bases
Kelbly Heavy rings
Defensive Edge Muzzle Brake
Wyatts extended BDL Magazine (max 3.800" OAL)
Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x40mm EFR
Harris Bi-pod w/podlock

All built by Truman Wilson (970)-874-3030

Of course the action was trued and lapped as well as the scope rings, it was also bedded and had the recoil lug pinned. I got the rifle and it was ready to go minus barrel break in. I also had it throated for the 215 Berger Hybrid, it has a +0.050" longer throat that puts the 215"s Boat tail/bearing surface junction at the neck/shoulder junction of the case and allows 0.015" jump to the rifling. Maximizing case capacity and meeting the recommended jump for the bullet. I can probably fit another grain to a grain and a half in the case before I see pressure signs. But, with the accuracy, ES, and velocity I'm getting, I see no reason to ruin bras any faster.

Hope this is what you were looking for!

I think about elk rifles a lot. My current favorite is my 700 Classic Whelen, soon to have a VX3 2.5-8x on board.

I also use my Kimber .325 Montana, also with a 2.5-8x VX3,

or an SS M70 .300 WinMag.

Waiting to be taken are an SS Howa 7 WSM.

I also have a 721 in .300 H&H I will take out some day, and a couple others I could press into duty if I have the opportunity.

I am thinking about building a couple more. The first, a Stainless M70, rebarreled to either .338-375 Ruger, or .340 Weatherby, McMillan Supergrade stock in something like an olive/tan/black McSwirley, Birdsong BlackT coating, and probably a VX6 2-12x. Looking for a finished weight of 8.5-9 pounds. The second, a .338-06 in an SS Remington 700 in a McMillan Edge stock that I already have, aftermarket trigger, VX3 3.5-10x40, trying to get just under 7 pounds dry.

Kurt,

Good to see your post. As always, lovely (colourful) rifles chambered in great cartridges.

...& the spike taken w/ yer .325 is obviously much morbigger & mordidder than Scotty's spike...

I will use a 257 Roy Vanguard for a Cow hunt anywhere but if I have a Bull tag I will more than likely take my new 300 Win Mag Accumark but I always carry 2 rifles on every hunt! BAR WSM in 300 would be welcome as well ! 257 would probably be using a 110 gr AccuBond or a 100 gr TSX and the 300's would probably be loaded with some Partitions !! Being Mobility impaired I use my truck as a stand but I can get around a little but I will hunt them high in Colorado and in The Gila here in NM !

Dang you Kurt! See what you've done!

That is a great pile of rifles you've got though.

I'm tuning up the 35 Newton for this Fall. It and the 338 will get to hunt.

Terry, I hope your able to zap a cow. My buddy drew a tag for around Rudosille (sp). He'll be sporting his new Whelen if it comes together in time.

You can limit yourself to two? :) On the morning I shot that spike, I seriously stood at my truck for five minutes before I took off, trying to decide if I would take my Montana, the purple 7 WSM, or my SS 700 .257 Weatherby out that morning...

Thanks, Doc. I lurk often, but sometimes I don't feel like posting much...

Sorry, brother. Don't sweat it, that Newton/Alaskan combo is way cooler than anything I have. Heck, everything I have.

I somehow never posted on this but I think mine is my 338AI. It's a beautiful mix of power and shootabillity. at about 8.5-9 lbs I feel like it's about the perfect rifle. Another rifle that I think would work great is a lightweight 280AI something light enough for the tough climbs but has enough punch without a tremendous amount of recoil.

Looks like my son is the elk hunter this season, with that very late cow tag. He'll most likely use the good old family .30-06 Model of 1917 with the 6x Leupold. Good combo that he's used on a couple of whitetail bucks and a couple of bears. Believe we'll load it up with 165 gr Nosler Partitions, which it shoots rather well. Mabye 180's, but probably the 165's.

Guy

I think young John is going to assassinate the poor cow when you find them Guy! That 06 certainly could be labeled the meat getter around the Miner house!

Thanks Scotty! I hope he gets an opportunity to fill the freezer. Might tan the hide if it's in good shape too. Elk hide is pretty cool.

In just a few short years, we'll celebrate the 100th birthday of this rifle. It certainly has worked out well for young John.

If I had to Really cut down the rifle inventory, I'd keep the .22 Marlin 39A and this old beat up .30-06... Though I might treat it to a new barrel finally.

Guy

Yeah buddy. You have done well with that old battle rifle.

I'm hoping John does get into elk. I'm pretty sure he'll make meat if he gets a cow within 400 yards.

This is going to be another one of those pretty weird hunts, where I'm carrying no rifle, and no tag. He'll be the only hunter when we go. Should be interesting. Still getting used to the idea that his tag isn't good until March of 2015!

We've done this before when he's been hunting and I've just been there as support, and for the pure fun of it. Good dad/son stuff.

Guy

I'll be much the same this year with my boy Guy. I'm the only guy that didn't draw in our group. I'm actually looking forward to just hunting with Brandon though.
