If you were building an elk rifle....

Scotty,

The Northwoods site presentsd 2700 fps as attainable for the 35 Sambar: http://www.35cal.com/ruger77_350wsm.html

Consequently, I was wrong about QL not having data for the 35 Sambar. With a 250 grain PT and RL15, here at the projections:

Cartridge : .35/300 WSM (.35 Sambar)
Bullet : .358, 250, Nosler PART SP 44801
Useable Case Capaci: 70.787 grain H2O = 4.596 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.860 inch = 72.64 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-15

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.
CAUTION: Figures exceed maximum and minimum recommended loads !

RL17 would be slightly more potent, though it would take a bit more powder.

I may find it mandatory to explore this. What about building this in a BLR with a 1:12 twist Pac-Nor barrel? The velocity would still be almost 2700 fps, which is higher than what is usually obtained from a 350 RM with a 200 grain bullet.

A BLR would be pretty cool in the Sambar. Never thought of that. Looking at the data, 60gr's nets about the same speed my Whelen does with the same charge of RL15. I am going to be working with the Whelen shortly and 250gr PT's. I am going to push it a little and see what comes out of it. Seems, looking at the numbers, the Sambar is out in front by about 200FPS which is a good place to be when looking at 250gr PT's. Scotty

I'll need to begin looking for a donor rifle. The transition won't be all that hard if I can pick up a BLR chambered in 325 WSM. It would be a fun project and give me something to think about over the coming year.

You might want to take a look at the 225 gr. Barnes TSX for your Whelen. I get 2700 FPS using RL-15 and I'm here to say that load smashed an elk down very hard last year.

PJ, I used that 225gr TSX on a bull elk, black bear and a few deer. I was getting 2750 out of the Whelen and the TSX. It worked really well! I just moved on to PT's as it is a more economical bullet to shoot. I do like the TSX and think that 225gr TSX out of a Whelen would be one round I would have 0 fears of hunting anything with. Scotty

Here is the recovered TSX from the black bear. The elk and deer were complete pass throughs. Scotty

If i was customizing an existing rifle in the safe. Here is what i did to a stainless weatherby vangard 300 win mag. Cut barrel to 20" recrown with recessed match type crown, replace the stock with a gray carbitite, put a 2.5x10x44 on it in weaver rings and a claw sling. I did not like how bright the stainless was in the sun, so i painted it a flat two color camo. I worked up two loads for the rifle. 180gr Etips at 2890fps for long range work, 220gr hornadys at 2700fps for timber hunting. Or this one, Whitworth mauser action, 7mm rem mag, 26" custom taper pacnor, 4.5x14x44 free floated/bedded wood stock. 175gr partitions at 2900fps.

A 20 inch .300 Winnie? That's gotta have some bark when it speaks!

20" 300 win mag with 180gr etips and H1000 not to bad. with 220gr and IMR7828SSC yes, muzzle blast is very noticable. It is also very noticable in a 24" ruger i have.

I've got two that I consider "elk rifles" although of course the good old .30-06 or my muzzle loader would do just fine as well:

.300 WSM Model 70, jewel trigger, Badger base, 4.5-14x Leupold. Use 200 Noslers or 210 Bergers. For longer range elk propositions:

And the .375 H&H Number One!

Problem is, I haven't shot an elk with either of them. Grumble, mumble....

I seem to do that also, my rifles I build are built for accuracy and are to heavy to carry up into the mountains. I am not going to make that mistake on my 300WM when I do get it built. I have enough flat country guns.

Nice elk Guy!
