I'll start watching for another one in a 300WM, and if it shoots like this one I will just add a Mcmillian hunters edge stock, limbsaver pad, and Vias brake and be ready to hunt. If not add a Kreiger or Lilja barrel to the build.
The 7mm would make a great primary rifle, but I want to shoot heavier bullets and carry a lighter rifle in the mountains if possible.
I'll try to get pics up tomorrow of a few of my guns.
Sounds good MC. Your 300WM build plan sounds like a great one. Why not push it to a 338 if you are building in that direction. Just wondering as I have 0 issues with the mighty 300WM! Seems like a 338 would be a pussy cat with a brake and really fling those super sleek 225's pretty close to your magical mark of 3K with some load work. Scotty
I think it will be easier to get 2900fps with 200gr bullets from a 24" 300WM than to get 2900fps with a 338WM with a 225gr bullet and the same barrel length. The 200 or 210gr bullets from the 338 give up alot of BC.
The Vias brake adds 1.1" and I really don't like barrels over 25". They stick out of my eberlestock to far, or catch on things to much on a sling. Also I want to get a 375 Ruger someday for anything to big for the 200gr AccuBond. I have nothing against the 338, I just like the 300. The 30 cal AccuBond should still exit an elk from any reasonable angle, it just doesn't have quite the frontal area. I shoot so much I have developed a flinch and am trying to limit the amount of recoil I take. I've been shooting my 22 mag and 6mm almost exclusively for this reason. When I was shooting the new 7 mag from the bench I had to really concentrate on the shot and not the recoil. I'd shot trap the night before and put 75 rounds through my 12 gauge so my shoulder was already sore. After talking to Vias, my 270WSM is getting a brake so I can see how I like them. That should drop it to around 243 recoil, maybe less. I really want to kill this flinch before it gets worse and want to lower the kick on the rifles I shoot alot. The 270WSM has a CDS scope and I do lots of practice shooting out to 600yds.
Good point and you have it nailed if you are going to get a 375 in the future. I hear alot of great things about the Vias brakes, so I doubt you will be disappointed. You have it nailed with recoil, less is better! Thank God for Limbsavers! Your right on with the 200gr AB. Pretty serious bullet. Might have to look at them for the 300 WBY I have coming! Scotty
I like the 300wby, it has great ballistics. If I wanted to go with a longer barrel I'd have to look at it pretty serious. I already have all the loading equipment for the 300WM though, and brass is much cheaper.
I have a 300WBY too. Well, I haven't picked it up from my buddies house yet, but the rifle is there. I have some dies and cases already, so I am looking forward to giving it a whirl. I am seriously looking at putting a Vias on it, right off the bat. Figure that would tame it down a little and make it a little more comfortable. I am going to shoot it first and see what it does. I figure it should push the 200's out over 3K pretty easily and man, that should be an excellent rifle for a beat around rifle. Scotty
I was just reading the latest Handloader magazine about the .358 Norma Magnum. I might have to think about getting a rifle built for it (and maybe a .308 Norma as well).
IF, I didn't have a 338WM, the 358 Norma would get built! I really like the 35's and with the Nosler selection available, I can't see a better heavy rifle other than a 358 Norma shooting 250gr PT's. I have the 35 Rem, 358 Win, and the Whelen, so the only real gap I have is a heavy 35! I have been tempted a few times to make my 338WM into a Norma. It shoots too well to mess with it though. Scotty
I don't have the Remington, but I have a Whelen and a .358 Winchester. Every once in a while I think about a .358 Norma or WSM... Layne Simpson almost had me talked into an STA.
I started to build a 358 Norma at one time, but I was diverted into the short magnums. It is about time to get back to the necessary focus of again building a 358 Norma. On the other hand, there is actually progress on building the 9.3 X 64.
That big 9.3 will be really something. How far along is the rifle Mike. I am pretty excited to see what it looks like in the end. It is going to be a hammer with those big bullets for sure. Scotty
There is another feller around the Cabelas side who is building a Brenneke also. I think you are much further along the path though right now. That is going to be something when you get it done I think. Between your 9.3 and Joel's 6.5WSM it should be a good Summer. I have a few rifles to work on myself, but nothing with the "cool factor" of those two. Scotty
Get the Vias Brake! I have one the 300RUM and it works! 200AB going 3200fps was a monster on the bench until i got a Vias. The recoil seems to be cut in half with the brake now.
I had a very difficult time securing a supply of brass, finally finding what appeared to be the only supplier in North America. Now, however, I see that Grafs is offering RWS brass on their web site. Whilst the 9.3 X 62 is more popular, the 9.3 X 64 sure delivers more energy. It should be a hammer on big game. I'm looking down the pike and wondering if it isn't time to maybe build a 35 Sambar. If so, it will be a year or two down the road. Still, it would be neat.
That Sambar is a cool one too. Kinda forgot about it. Are you able to QL it with 250's? That would probably put a good spin on it to see what it could do over the Whelen or to see if it comes close to the Norma. Scotty
A quick review of QL doesn't reveal any data for the Sambar, but there is a fair amount of data floating around the Internet. I don't believe it would be too difficult to work up a load. A 250 grain PT launched at around 2700 fps from that cartridge would work very well for grizz.
Mike, you think 2700 is attainable in the Sambar in a 24" barrel? Just wondering. I guess if you got the rifle throated for the longer 250's it would allow you to really use the case capacity to the utmost. Scotty
