Earlier this year I purchased an 8# keg of IMR 7383 mil supr powder from Jeff Bartlett. On the label it states "use IMR 4831 less 15%". So I am starting to work up loads for my 3006, 180 gr NBT and 7 mm Wea Mag , 160 gr AB. So I have reduced the starting loads and maximum loads each by 15% to start. I have loaded up 43, 44 AND 45 grs for the 30/06 and 53, 54, and 55 grs for the 7 mm Wea Mag. I plan to shoot them tomorrow to see how they clock.

My question to the board experts, specifically with the 7MM Wea Mag, with the reduced charge level that I have loaded, would anyone be concerned about "detonation" of not full cases or would you think these would be good to go, and work up from there?

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

The numbers you posted are a little low I think looking at the Nosler #6 it looks like you reduced your load by 15 grains not 15%. That may very well be in the danger zone. According to my numbers off a calculator the 06 would start at 49 gr and 58 for the Bee. Someone with QL may be able to run some numbers for you and get you in the ball park.

45.0 grains should be your start for the 180 grain bullet in the '06. 52.7 grains should be your start load for the 160 AB in the 7 Wby.

I have decided to abandon the use of the IMR 7383 mil surp powder. I read an interesting article written about it which indicates it has a very small sweet spot and causes pressure spikes very quickly if that sweet spot is exceeded. I do not want to risk life, limb or gun with this powder.

However, I was able to purchase 2 - 8# kegs of VihtaVouri N160 powder and I will begin working up loads with this powder, which is probably better suited to my application anyway.
