Is 3150 fps too much for a .270 140 B-Tip ??

I'll be going on an antelope hunt in Oct and was wondering if 3150 fps is too much for a Ballistic tip?? I used to use this with great success in my .270 Win, but that was only at 2850 fps. My new .270 WSM gets 3150 or better with the Accubonds, but I'm thinking of going to a B-Tip since I'm told by my outfitter that all shots will be well over 200 yards, probably over 300 yards, and possibly over 400 yards. I'm thinking the AccuBond may not make as dramatic a kill as a B-Tip. I'm kind of looking for a Bang-Flop type scenario.

I shoot 140gr Ballistic Tips in the 270 Weatherby. The BT is a fantastic bullet. All three of the does I shot last year were dropped in their tracks. Shots were 150-250 yards.

The bullet does amazing things when the shooter does his part, but it's not very forgiving when you screw it up. One of my shots was a little high and made a mess of some of the meat. The other two were lung shots.... there wasn't much left of the lungs when I dressed them out.

My load is substantially faster than 3150.... That said, I'm going to try Accubonds this season. I have 100% confidence in the BT, but I want to see what the AccuBond does.

I feel the NBT is at it's best when impact vel. is @ 2700fps or less. If yuo are sure your shots are going to be over 300, you should be ok. I would probably move to the NAB in your WSM. My last antelope was shot @ about 120yds using a 7mmDakota. I use the 160gr NP, planned for 400yd shot & just got lucky on my stalk, took him bedded. It was still a bang/flop, the bullet was placed on the shoulder, very little bloodshot meat damage.

bowhuntrrl,

The 140 gr BT would work great in your 270 WSM, you just need to keep your IMPACT velocities BELOW 3000 fps. Based on 3150 fps MV, you are below 3000 fps at 100 yds. See below.

Range Velocity Energy Drop
(yards) (ft/sec) (ft-lbs) (inches)
0 3150.0 3084.4 1.5
100 2930.3 2669.2 1.3
200 2721.1 2301.6 -0.0
300 2521.7 1976.7 -6.0
400 2331.8 1690.2 -17.5

If they shoot good in your rifle, I would say go for it and get-r-done!

In june i shot a black bear at 25 yards (we met on a corner) and hit him in the neck, velocity was 3275 with a 25cal 100gr BT and recovered the bullet for 62% weight retension. I was impressed.
