It Could Be a Shooter

I do have one Browning also! It is a BLR, so that is the excuse I am sticking with! Scotty

Let me go on record as saying that we are living in a glorious time, when there are few domestic manufacturers that are making absolute junk. Off-the-shelf rifles today would have been the envy of benchrest shooters in the not-too-distant past. Most of us expect--and obtain--MOA or better accuracy from mass produced rifles. I've never really had a serious problem with Browning, or Savage or even Remington (until selected models in recent years). Winchester has cleaned up their act, so I am able to continue enjoying my favourite rifle without having to make excuses for the rough finish. Having said all that (and all joking aside), I'm pleased with this Remington. It is a shooter. Now, if I can just get the two CDLs I have to shoot this well and somehow finagle back the 35 Whelen Classic that I let slip through my fingers.

That 35 Whelen classic you let slip away is almost unforgivable

I'll say! I'm still in mourning. I sold it to buy a Ruger in 35 Whelen. I'm sure I'll be able to get it shooting to my specifications, but it will have taken some doing before I'm done. I don't believe I'll let either of my 280s leave in the care of someone else.

A 30-06 converts to the 35 Whelen pretty easy if you're desperate for a Whelen.

Don

Thats what I'm saying! Why have a 30-06 when you can have the mighty Whelen! Scotty

Mike -
You need a 338-06 instead of a Whelen :p . Join the A-Square club and enjoy the best of both worlds...

Joel,

I'm converting a 243 into a 338 Federal (Baptist Pastor, so you would expect such efforts at conversion). I have the dies and brass and tons of bullets for the 35 Whelen. I do like the 338-06, however. Perhaps I should just ... now, cut that out!

You are being enabled and forbid that any of use should tempt you so

Thank you for your kind consideration, Mike. Man, this is tough.

That 338-06 is a great round. Seeing the light later on in life really makes you recognize how closely the 338-06/35 Whelen really are by the 338WM for all intents and purposes. It would be hard to go wrong with those two, and again, you can't beat the price of cases and the ability to use 180-280gr bullets in them. Pretty versatile rounds. I bought the 338WM before the Whelen, I am not so sure there would be a 338WM if I had of had the Whelen first. Scotty

I did the same Scotty, and I know if I had bought the 35 Whelen first there would not have been a 338Win mag. in my battery of rifles. .35 calibers just plain rock.

Fixed it for you.

Yeah guys - I sold my 338 Win mag after I had the 338-06 built, and that 338 Win mag was a unbelievable shooter right out of the box.

BTW - saw a nice 358 BLR in the gun library at Cabela's when I was there yesterday buying powder.

My 358Win is a real thumper indeed. I love it, 2556fps with a 225gr AccuBond out of my Ruger Hawkeye

Could not have said it better! I really like those 35's too. They are just plain awesome.

Your Ruger Hawkeye is one of my favorites! That is a serious load with the 235gr AB. I am hoping to duplicate it soon. That 358 is a heckuva great round too. Probably the best of the 308 based cartridges! Scotty

My 358 Hawkeye is the reason I bought the 35 Whelen Hawkeye. However, they are not the same rifle by any stretch of the imagination. The 358 shoots great groups at fine velocities; fit and finish is very good. The 35 Whelen is quite bluntly, a disappointment.

Your Ruger was the reason I didn't buy a 25-06 Hawkeye. Just too chicken. I do have a good Hawkeye 308 though. I guess it is hit or miss. Rugers are good rifles, just sometimes they act like Remingtons! Scotty
