It Could Be a Shooter

Your Ruger was the reason I didn't buy a 25-06 Hawkeye. Just too chicken. I do have a good Hawkeye 308 though. I guess it is hit or miss. Rugers are good rifles, just sometimes they act like Remingtons! Scotty

I loved the old Rugers with the red recoil pad and tang safety. I have had a .280, 7X57 and .338 mag. I bought a .257 Roberts hawkeye off the SPS autions two years ago and it has not been as easy to make loads work as the old Rugers.

Guess I got lucky with mine as far as accuracy :)

Well DrMike I think you're done.
My go to rifle is a Remington 700 in 280 and with H4831SC and 139 Hornady BTSPs it has filled a bunch of whitetail tags.Shot a few hogs and some yotes too.

The versatility of the 280 is hard to beat.
Work up some loads with a 150 Partition and a 160 AB, what more does a fella need?

Nice looking rifle and some fine shooting!

Howard,

I love the 280. I doubt that my safe will ever be without one so long as I'm still breathing.

Send that 280 to me and let me see how it will shoot. I will send it back to you when I am finished trying it out, trust me

Mike,

I'd be happy to send this 280 to you, but there is a little issue of the border that stands between us. Homeland Security is keeping you safe from radicals like us Canucks. We might divert you from thinking straight, and you could elect a conservative or perform some other such radical act. Sigh! I guess I'll just make myself enjoy it. 8)

DOOOOOCCCCCTTTTTTTTTTOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRR M - i - k - e !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was funny

Well, I am on the border but not south of it :p . So send it on down to me and I will do some range testing for you. I mean it is a Remington so whats to lose  Other than it might make me vote conservative.

Truth be known, an accurate and properly loaded 280 Remington is all a fella needs to hunt NA.

JD, I would agree with you as long as the 280 is not required to deal with dangerous game at close quarters. I personally know of a person in Alaska who was running his traps and was killed by a Brown after he emptied his 280 into the bear. The officers noted that it was apparent from the sign that the bear had been stocking the man for about 1/2 a mile. The bear broke out on him at about 40yds and he hit the bear 3 times. They had to track the bear and finish it, but the trapper did not make it.

Mike,

I agree with you. I did not finish my thoughts in the previous post.......

For the very biggest of game, including the big bears, the 35 Whelen fits the bill.

A 280 can take a big bear if it is not real close quarters and the bear is not worked up. 7mm Remington will also take a bear. I think you are right that a hunter in N/A could pick up a 280 and using different bullet weights could kill anything in N/A with good shot placement. I did not mean to play down the 280, it's accuracy alone makes it and outstanding killer because the hunter can really make a good shot.

Love the 280, and I'm comfortable carrying it in the field. It is certainly better than a stick when confronting a grizzly. However, I would be less than thrilled about facing an agitated bear with this; I'd much rather have a 350 Rem Mag or a 35 Whelen.

agreed, can't argue with the power of the 35's.

Don

Agree, a 250 gr PT at 2600 fps from a 35 Whelen is impressive!
