Well Ladies and Gents, I have decided; I am going to have a 30-06 built to my specs. I have been doing a lot of researching and looking, and so far the plan is:

Action: M70 donor (probably off of a Super Shadow) or Montana 1999
Barrel: Bartlein 1/10" 5R cut to 26" either in their 3, 3B, or Light Palma Contour
Stock: Manners MCS-TA

Going to have it throated to handle longer, heavier bullets (180's and up)

Not sure if I want a DBM or a floorplate yet...Still on the fence.

Not sure on who I will have build it yet, thinking GA Precision, Long Rifles Inc, or ???

Thoughts?

AJ,

Congratulations on the new project. Its tough to beat the good 'ol 30-06 for an all around rifle.
I would go with a 24" barrel to get some really good speeds with the heavier bullets. I would go with the internal magazine and floor plate over the DBM. Its easier to carry extra rounds than a clip that you could loose.
Consider Rob Canze at Williams Gun Sight in Davison, MI. 810 653 2131. Rob built my 280 AI as well as tack drivers for a few friends. All these rifles are sub .5 MOA shooters.

Good luck with the project and enjoy the process.

That advice is spot on, AJ.

Glad you are building a custom. I am looking forward to photos & load work up once it is done .

Blessings,
Dan

Sounds like a good plan with some of those sleek 180 - 200 gr bullets out there these days it will carry the mail way out there.......

AJ, for what it is worth, I have never owned (out of 30, M70's) a Model 70 that will not shoot better groups with a floor plate and steel bottom metal. My newest .30-06 Model 70 has a Matte Williams, one piece bottom metal and it will shoot 1/4 MOA groups at 200 yards if I do my part. It is a newer Model 70, built in 1996. Something to consider.

Awesome...its good to see more people building customs on model 70's!

Can't wait to see the finished product!

Doesn't get much better than -06 and the M70. I think White Feather would be proud. Those Manners stocks are pretty damn sweet too. Sounds like a pretty slick build plan bud. Enjoy! As I recall, you were on the East Coast and far from Albuquerque, but Charlie Robertson at Score High Gunsmithing does good work.

Very nice AJ. Sounds like a really nice rifle.

Got another buddy building a 35 Whelen, with a PacNor Fluted #3, his grandfathers old Model 700, a McMillan Rem Sporter stock and Talleys. Already has a Meopta with the #4 reticle waiting on the rifle. Seems like some cool rifles being put together lately.

Your 30-06, set up like that could be a dream ender. Once you have it, your not likely to want much else!

...before you get too wound up on those "heavy" bullets, you might want to consider why "The Rifle" is a Springfield '03 & the cartridge is a .30-06, not the original .30 Govt. (research time). There's a point where you start to encounter "diminishing returns", whether it be too small a bore & too much powder or too much bullet & not enough powder. Even an extremely high BC won't gain you anything w/o some MV, your bullet's dropping too fast to take advantage of the BC. The '06 will shoot 190's, 200's, 220's just fine, but don't expect miracles. That said, there's plenty of good 165-190gr. bullets available that will give you a very good balance of velocity, BC, & terminal performance, lots more choices than there were back in '06. Just ask Dr. Mike...
