Just keep cleaning, just keep cleaning...

Well I foamed the rifle for 4 more hours and the patches came out white!!! I then went with Bore Cleaner for 20 passed up and down followed by 20 passes up and down with Rem Oil. I did this for a total of five times and here are what my patches look like. I do not see any improvement at all. Not only in these patches but in all of them. This is what they all look like when I use the Bore Cleaner and Rem Oil. Will they ever come out clean?

Sorry I am posting so much about cleaning a rifle, my wife is sick of me cleaning it and showing her the black patches. :)

Been there, done that. It will come clean, just give it time. I cleaned one of my uncle's guns for two weeks and had the same results as you have been experiencing. I did finally cheat and used some bore paste. That seemed to really blow thru a few layers of crud. I did it as a surprise favor for him. He was extremely pissed that I cleaned out all the "seasoning" as he called it. "It's like a cast iron pan, stupid. You don't clean 'em down to bare metal!!" Gun shot better than it ever did afterwards.

Now I'll clean out all the carbon and give it a soak in Kroil for a day or two. Then hit the carbon again before I start to concentrate on the copper.

Yeah this is the stage where that JB Bore Compound would come in REALLY handy for you; all those years of neglect will necessitate serious elbow grease!!

From what I have read, the Remington Bore Cleaner is an like JB but easier to use?! It will get there with time. After this one is done, I have a few more in mind that need some work. If I were you guys, I would take stock in cleaning patches.

Maybe I'm just showing (again) what a cheapskate I am, but I keep my yellowed-underarm undershirts and cut 'em up as cleaning patches!

I didn't know that about the Remington Bore Cleaner. I'll have to try that someday, although as often as I clean my rifles I'm not likely to work through the JB in a lifetime :) .

The old shirts are for roofing and working-out until they are so nasty I would not put them through a rifle. JD338, I just did anther set of 5 and the patches look the same. I will keep at it.

Yup, It sucks and is disheartening, but I would say you are dealing with multiplle layers of coper and carbon and copper and ..... Keep at it, and use a bore guide. Ive never used JB bore paste but many swear by it, and its said a smoother bore is easier to keep clean. Hang in there. Oh and be sure when you are done you preserve your bore. My choice is CLP. CL

Serious build-up calls for serious compounds. Time for some judicious use of JB Bore Paste.

The good news is, WT, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The bad news is, I believe it's still a ways to the end of the tunnel. You've got a lot of crud in there. But you're getting it out. I'd continue to hit this thing every night for a couple of weeks. At some point, you'll have to consider that the abrasive bore cleaner is simply pulling a little bit of metal residue out of the bore and may never be completely "clean" when you patch through. I'm not positive on this, but I've not ever seen JB's come out the same color it went it. Best I've ever gotten is some greyish-black coloration, rather than black as night. I've also alternated Hoppe's #9 (tremendous carbon solvent) and BoreTech Eliminator to get the layers out, though I believe BTE will get both carbon and copper. It's just a lot of layers of gunk, and you've got to go through them all to get to the metal. Hopefully it will settle down shortly and you'll be alright.

Has anyone used the Outers Foul Out electronic system and what is your opinion if it?

I have used it for several years and can see the copper that adheared to the aluminum rod, but have never been sure I have cleaned down to bare metal.

I have one. I absolutely love it.

The rod will come out of the barrel completely coated in copper. I've had my .270 for over 30 years. Accuracy was starting to go, and I was getting ready to rebarrel it. I gave it a good cleaning with the Foul Out, and now it shoots better then it ever has. The thing really works!

Well it is still coming out black. I worked on it for an hour today. I did use some Hoppe's #9 and that is coming out with color on it also. The Bore Cleaner comes out darker but they both show that it is not clean yet.

I appreciate your comments on the Foul-Out System. I wonder why Outer doesn't promote it more aggressively. It seems like a great concept. Is it a mess to set up?

Its not bad, just cleaning the rod was what I always hated most, and if you happen to "cook" a pitted barrel, its weeks before it shoots right again.

Regarding the Foul Out, I do not find it very messy at all. It is really easy to use. But again, I have some doubt that I have cleaned down to bare metal. I guess I need to find someone with a Bore Scope to take a look see.

I wouldn't use the bore paste too often. I would use it like every 5 days. What are you using for copper? I didn't see you mention anything beside the Rem Bore Cleaner. If so, I would get a liquid or foam copper cleaning agent. Alternate between the carbon cleaning and copper cleaning agents one day of each.

I just hate to see you using an abrasive so much. Just make sure the copper cleaner you get isn't too aggressive, otherwise you'll have to limit the soak you give it.
