If a 26 Nosler were to be considered..... Would you rather have a Rock 5R or a Bartlein 5R barrel or maybe a Douglas premium(They're about 120$ cheaper).All three of these are available right now with no waiting. In a 1 in 8 twist or 1 in 8.5 twist? 26 or 28 inches? I'm thinking 28" it could always be shortened. Reamers, gauges and Dies will be available shortly. What say you all?

I'd go Pac-Nor because I've had really good luck but any would work then with a 28" you can set back. Maybe once or twice to get to 1500 if the rifling handles the abuse. Brass is gonna be pretty expensive too. Saw $65/25 on midway. Or the same for a box of ammo. I'd be tempted just to buy factory rounds and go from there. What are the other details on your build action, stock, etc?
 
Bartlein, $260 for 100 pieces of brass is a bit excessive, you can get 338 lapua brass from lapua cheaper than that.
 
Bartlein 5R would be my first choice with the results I'm getting with the 338-375 Ruger. That Rock 5R or a Brux would be good barrels also.
 
I am a Hart fan but all the barrels you mentioned would be good.
Go 28" then you can set the barrel back when you get throat erosion. FWIW, Nosler is testing the 26 Nosler
for barrel life. They are nearing 1k rounds with no issues.

I can't help on the barrel manufacturers but a 1 in 8 twist would be the way to go some of those 6.5 mm bullets are long. Besides there is a good chance Nosler will offer a bullet heavier than 140 gr in the future to support their new round.

But everyone "knows" the 26 Nosler will be a barrel burner :wink: nice to hear they are getting good barrel life.

Is the Hart barrel still made by the same outfit that made them years ago? I think I saw something on their website a while back that made me wonder.
 
I think I'd just go 26" and call it a day. Barrel life will be what it is.. It has to handle decent for it to be put into the hunting lineup.

I've always thought highly of Shilen barrels. True enough, most of my rifles wear PacNor or Hart barrels, but I wouldn't hesitate to use a Shilen.
 
I would pick the Bartlein. All the most recent builds I've done have been Bartlein barrels and all have shot exceptionally well. Let's hope they keep this quality up because in the past many of the barrel companies have let quality slip when they got busy and that is why I no longer use Hart and Lilja. They are also the straightest bores out of all the barrels I've used. Most are less than .015" out at 28+" and several have been .006-.008". For an example, the two Benchmarks barrels I did recently were .038" and .041" out at 26" and 27". Straightness doesn't necessarily mean accuracy but I can't see where it would hurt it at all either.
 
I'm a Douglas fan and would go that route and get a stainless XX Air gauge barrel which they hand lap. Nosler's Jennifer Holbrook told me she could hook me up with a reamer when I talked to her today at the show in Harrisburg PA. She also said the inert round she handed me was made from a 7mm Rum case and the head stamp was 7mm Rum. She said it took 4 different operations to form the case but it sure looked Sweeeeet :!:
I'm awfully tempted to have the M70 donor rebarreled for it since I was able to see it first hand and handle it. If I lived out west or some place I could stretch it out 500yds or better it would be a done deal in my book.

I have two possible donors both CRF Model 70s. One is a stainless 338 Win Mag; the second is CM 300RUM. I'd like to use the RUM because of the longer mag but I'm worried about how the 26 Nosler will feed from the Mag. I was kind of saving the 338 for a 338-375Ruger. If I use the 338 I'll add a Wyatts extended mag box. I think the 26 Nosler might like to stretch those long bullets out. I have two nice wood Winchester stocks; one is a dark Supergrade stock, the other is a Safari grade stock. The barrel taper will determine which one works best. I think I'll add a Manners or Mickey later on. I'll end up pillar and action bedding the wood stock myself. Does anybody have any input about the 26Nosler feeding from the 300RUM magazine? The only barrels I can find that will make 28" are med. palmas'; I think that might be to heavy- even if fluted. I may just go with the 26" fluted Sendero.
The brass will be expensive but after the initial shock I'd imagine the brass will last a long time. I plan on using this gun as a hunting gun not a target or sage rat gun(although I'd like to try and nail one at 600yds! :grin:

The 26 Nosler is based off the 7mm Rum according to Jennifer Holbrook a Nosler out side sales rep I talked to in Harrisburg Pa. She also said she could hook us up with a reamer to chamber a custom rifle with. I would go with the 300 Rum rifle since it was already built to feed the Rum style cartridge.
