guys , i have 3 35 whelens in the safe . 2 7600 rem pumps and one newly aquired rem 700 bolt. years ago i developed a WARM load of 60.0 grs or h335 , rem brass, rem 9.5 mag primers at 3.260 in 225 sierra bt for my pump gun. the the load is easy sub moa and is very terminal on p.a. and w.v. whitetails. curious of the pressure generated by this load and or velocity since i have never had a chance since my chrono died. all 22in remington barrels on these guns. as a side note i have been toying with rl 15 in the new bolt gun which seems to pressure out early in bolt gun. i wonder which powder is giving me the best speed or is it the sierra bullet that is giving me the destruction on these 150lb whitetails. your thoughts..?

QL projects that with a 225 grain Sierra bullet and 60 grains of H335, you're generating 67406 psi, which is well above SAAMI specs for the cartridge. However, your chamber may be slightly larger, allowing for more expansion and hence, less pressure. Assuming everything is to specs, you are generating 2759 fps at the muzzle and 3802 ft-lbs of energy. Fifty-six point five grains of H335 is a safe load, generating about 140 fps less velocity, but only 400 ft-lbs less energy. That is more than enough for whitetails.

The Sierra is a fine bullet and will perform very well for you, I should imagine. ReLoder 15 will give you fine performance in the Whelen. Here is a projection for that powder with the same bullet.

Pressure generates velocity, up to a point where velocity plateaus. If you wish to test for more velocity, step up your charge incrementally, watching for pressure signs.

Did you ever have signs of excessive pressure when you shot the load you mentioned? Did either of your 7600s ever fail to extract? How was case life? There are a number of variables here that could allow for higher charge. Candidly, you are not gaining that much more velocity and there is ample energy to drop any deer in North America in your loads.

the h335 load has been problem free for a very long time in the 7600. very accurate and killed like lightning. i have seen a few cup seperartions but in over 10 kills since i fist made this box of bullets not one deer has went father the 20 ft. when i got the new to me 700 classic this year i started with rl 15 and the 225 sierras. pressure came at 57 gr i did another pressure test with aa 2520 and with similar results pressure earlier that max book loads. i then changed bullets and tried 225 npt with rl 15 and fed 210. got .75 in accuracy at 58 grs and primers were starting to just go flat at 59grs. i stopped for now as i did not have any more h335 to run a pressure work up with the partitions. it has been buging me however to have to take a step back with the newer 700. i know that no deer that walks can tell the difference but it drives me nuts to go backwards i guess. i realize that chamber and barrel dimensions are probably different but usually i can work to a book max load easy. also from what ive noticed the headspace is correct. is the AccuBond 225 much different in accuracy and or killing effect than the 225 Partition? i am very tempted to try a box but do not want to beat the dead horse if you will...?

TAC also works well

I have had good success in my M700 Classic 35 Whelen with IMR 4064 and AA2015BR in the past. These days, its RL 15.

Thanks for all the great info. Looks like i have some options available and will just have to get a new chrono and a pound of powder or two. Those accubonds will be on the list as well. When i get some good test data i will be sure to repost. Thanks again, Pat

The AccuBonds are an excellent bullet. They will not, however, kill any more effectively than do the Partitions. Partitions have been around and favoured by knowledgeable hunters for several decades for a reason--they work.

Just curious, Mike. Does QL predict a different max load for different bullets of the same weight? Say, 225 grain Sierra, AB, Partition, TSX?

Kurt, yeah, it sure does. Different bullets will show much different pressures within the same bullet weights.

I have used alot of RL15 in the 35 Whelen and it has done excellent for me. I do think Varget has alot of merit as well. Just depends on what you use the most of. I started with RL15 and it has worked really well for me, so I haven't found the need to switch it up.

Kurt,

Scotty nailed it. QL generates data on the basis of samples presented to Harmut Broemel for measurement and tests. Data is dependent upon a variety of parameters, including, but not limited to, jacket composition, bearing surface and obturation qualities.

I use 60.4 gr. of RL15 with the 225 gr. Barnes TSX bullet for 2710 FPS. No apparent signs of pressure in my custom Mauser. Accuracy is superb.
I tried 53.0 gr. H335 with the 250 gr. Speer Hot Core and Hornady spire point and round nose bullets in the Mauser and my Remington M700 Classic and Ruger M77RS. Velocity ranged from 2500 to 2550 depending on the rifle and bullets. Accuracy was good. Pressures appeared to be normal.
I'll be doing load work ups with the 225 gr. Partition and a box of 225 gr. ballistic Tips I came across at a yard sale. I think I'll stick with RL15. I may see what it does with the various 250 gr. bullets as well.
Paul B.

Fotis, you were right.. the accubonds were the trick! Showed accuracy nodes at 58 and 60 grs. No pressure issues. Grouped right at a measured 5/8 in at 100 yds. Happy camper here! Thanks again guys!

In 1958 my first experience with Sierra's, on big game (elk) did not go well. With several well placed bullets at medium range he was still able to navigate several miles. I have not be able to recreate the same experience with Nosler Partitions, since 1961. Perhaps a 225 at modest velocities would work better for you. For elk speed them up for pass thru penetration.

Bill, Obturation refers to plugging an opening. In this case, it refers to the quality of a bullet to seal the barrel, permitting the gasses to push the bullet the length of the barrel.

Elkman, after using them on lots of whitetails i would agree with you. I speculate i had them going 2700 fps. They killed well but seemed to grenade. My concern was the patition being too tough a bullet for these thin boned whitetails. I try to avoid a runaway deer as there are many people in the woods. I try my best to ancor them to the ground asap to keep this from happening. I had never shot anything with the patition thus my questioning. I i was hunting elk i wouldnt hesitate.

The 225 PT will open very fast at 358 Winchester speeds of around 2450. It blows through deer from any angle and will shed enough weight and hammer deer. In the 35 cal's, I love the 225 PT's. More bullet than needed for deer, but it will thump them. It is impressive.

I will not go there. I will not go there. I will fight the urge! Oh!!!!!!!!!! I can't resist. Do you have to use a bullet?
