Kodiak Bear hunt/charge

I have a problem with a bow hunter who is not competent at those ranges :(!! That kinda stuff can give all hunters a bad rap.

Blessings,
Dan

I know. Nosler06 and I were watching it. The whole time, we were discussing that. Maybe a little bit of adrenaline came into effect? Then when the guide was holding the rifle, I was almost yelling at the computer screen for him to drop the range finder...tunnel vision perhaps?

That was a big bear that's for sure. Sometimes I wonder if bow hunting them is a good idea but I do know a couple of young guys that want to try it and I would like to back them up.

If done right I think bow hunting them is safer than rifle hunting. Generaly if you stick one good he either runs off or mills around for 30 seconds and falls over. If you had shot that bear with a rifle he would have imediately known where the “ouch” came from and attacked.

My buddy stuck one on kodiak a few years ago at 10 yards with a recurve. It ran 25 yards up the coastline. Stopped looked around and fell over.

nerves or not those where not good hits, the guide should have started shooting imediately after seeing him gut punch that bear.

I've watched videos of several big bruins that toppled after thirty seconds or less after being stuck. While it would be nerve wracking to stick one, done properly it would make for a quick kill, as is true of virtually all big game. The key is that the archer has practised and is competent.

Looks like he shot into the spine just behind the head, instant death for the bear. If he would have missed that would have been nasty.......

That's what it looked like to me too Gerry. When made that behind the head, neck/shoulder shot is about as effective as it gets

I agree. It looked just behind the head. A pretty good shot for anyone. I can imagine the adrenaline rush would be extreme.

If it is such a great idea to bow hunt a big bear like that, why not have the back up with a bow. Think about that. Maybe not such a great idea after all.
Use enought gun comes to mind, use the right tool for the job. Or you can't fix stupid.

I understand that even Fred Bear had a guide toting a .375 as a backup when hunting grizzly and polar bear, and that the rifle was used more than once.

Gutsy though, hunting the big bears with a bow...

I have two buddies that have killed brown bears with traditional bows solo. Its dangerous but not a suicide mission!
