Last few years of CO hunts

Well I figured I'd share a few stories of my families hunts from the past few years. I'm not sure how the pictures are going to line up on here so I apologize ahead of time.

The first hunt I'll discuss is my youngest brothers first elk hunt. We were hunting near Montrose, CO and spotted two cows bedded in a thick oak brush canyon and made our way to the opposite side of them. The brush was over 6' tall and we were about 900 yards away from them still. We worked out way down into the canyon a bit and found a clearing that would allow us to get a clear view of the elk that were now feeding on the hillside. We ranged one of the cows at 599 yards and dialed the rifle. He was shooting ,y .300 Win. Mag with 210 Berger VLD's and was able to get the rifle set up on the bipod prone using a backpack as rear support. No wind, 9MOA up and he sent one down range. It hit the cow centerline of the body right on the shoulder and dropped her instantly. I've honestly never seen an elk go down that hard before; great start to his hunting career. Gathered up some relatives for the mile pack out and we were done.

The next is my dad's bull hunt. we were hunting on the wester side of CO and spotted this bull at first light on opening day across a huge canyon. The wind was howling and we were looking directly into the sun which made looking through the scopes difficult. The bull stopped in a clearing at 590 yards. He was shooting his custom .30-06 and 180gr. Nosler AB's. dialed the scope for proper elevation and added 2MOA for wind and sent it. It hit the bull high in the shoulder and rolled him. He Scores a touch under 300 but is a really symmetrical bull. It was a bit of a pack out but well worth it.

The next is my fathers buck hunt. We were hunting in NW colorado during the fourth rifle season and were seeing very few deer, and even fewer decent bucks. We had gotten snuck up on by a decent four point the day before (Walked within 20 feet of us) but he was lacking mass and had no brow tines so we passed on him. Still, an experience that I will never forget. We found this buck on the third day of the hunt and decided to take him. We were 430 yards away from him and with an '06 and 180 Nosler BT's it was a piece of cake. Dropped him quickly and had a short pack out to the ATV. Scored 170'ish.

The last hunt is of my mothers antelope hunt. We were hunting in NW CO and we found this buck on opening morning. They were extremely skittish (as antelope usually are) and wouldn't let us get too close. She was shooting a custom .308 WIn. with 168gr. Barnes TSX. We got on a hill above them and lazed them at 433 yards. Dialed the scope and shot. he sprinted about 40 yards (which takes no time at all for an antelope) and piled up. Not the biggest buck we saw on the trip but she was happy with him. We were also in the camper taking a nap by 12 that afternoon.

Hope you enjoy these short stories, it's not much but it's been fun!

AWESOME stories buddy and excellent pictures. I enjoyed the heck out of reading them and seeing the pictures. Very nice write up. Seems you have a pack of dialed in shooters. I liked your Dad's shot with the 30-06 and the young boys first elk. Very awesome. All of it. Thank you for sharing it all.

Your Dad's bull is a keeper in my book. Great looking bull.

Those are great accounts of memorable hunts. Thanks for sharing.

Nice pictures and account of your family's hunts. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

300winmag,
The old 06 STILL IS A KILLER huh? With the right bullet and shot placement it will kill nearly anything.
