Couldn't resist the urge to go get a little rifle practice today, the day before our nine-day mule deer season opens. Took both the 700 CDL's, .25-06 and .30-06. Have decided to hunt with the .30-06, as this rifle is new to me this year. I only shot a couple of 3-shot groups with it at 100 yards, just to check the zero and get a little last minute trigger time. One group was right at one inch, the other just over an inch. Am zeroed at 250 yards with this rifle, so the groups printed about 3" high at 100 yards.
Ammo was handloaded 165 gr Nosler Partitions over enough H4350 to generate a mellow 2800 fps from the 24" Remington barrel.
I don't mind the MOA groups at all. I shot from prone, using just the sling for stability, just like I do in the field. I'll take one MOA from a sling supported position anytime. The .30-06 is just a joy to shoot. That cushy recoil pad & good stock design take all the bite out of it. Someday I'll likely take a pound or so off that trigger, but otherwise it's a dandy rifle, just the way Remington built it.
The .25-06 & 6x Leupold is on the left, the .30-06 has the lighter colored stock and an old 2-7x Redfield "Gold Star" scope. Although old, it's a quality scope, very clear and the click adjustments are quite positive. It was on a rifle that didn't stay with me, but the scope did.
Hopefully I'll find a good mule deer buck sometime in the next few days, and blood this particular 700 CDL!
Regards, Guy
