Lets talk thump

Now if I can just get enough Gamma Globulin pumped into my body each week to actually be physically able to go out into the hills shoot another elk, for the first time in ten years. Life would be wonderful again.

It's amazing what we will go through to chase elk, isn't it? You, sir, have my respect for your dedication and toughness.

Same here Charlie. Wished I could assist you to get out this year. Heck, I would even pack that big MK5 for ya, or carry some meat around if needed. Scotty

The 223s and 6mms I have are fun to shoot/hunt with but the big boomers can be just as fun. The 45-70 is my favorite right now. I see a 375, 416, or another 458 in the near future.

I know where this is a M70 Safari Express 375 H&H right now Brian! Scotty

I am a big fan of the 338 RUM. The on game performance is impressive to say the least. Every animal I have shot has dropped at the shot.
I am shooting a stock M700 LSS with a Mark 4 4.5-14x40mm and she shoots .5 MOA with everything I have loaded. At 9 lbs, recoil is manageable even from prone.

Using a VX-III in 3.5 to 10 40mm on mine Found great loads with 200 225 and 250 Ab's but she will not shoot the 180 AB's and I have tried more than enough combo's to prove that out. RL-22 for 200's H-1000 for 225's and Retumbo for the 250's. It is insane how flat shooting this caliber is not to mention good accuracy. I am lucky to break .5 MOA closer to .75 but that is the guy on the trigger not the cartridge or rifle. So close to the 340 weatherby and the .338 Lapua it is not funny. I really really like this cartridge as do a lot of others but it seems to be fading away from Remington's production.

I have had very good luck shooting the 180 Ballistic Tips (when you can find them) in the .338 Federal at about 2680 fps. They will group well under MOA out to 200 yards when I do my part.

I will have to load up a few of the 180 BT's for my .340 Bee just for laughs and see what I get for velocity and accuracy?

When I was a kid and graduated up from the .22 rim fire, Dad taught me to use his .30-06 rifles. Told me way back then that the .30-06 was enough for anything in North America. Now, 45 years later, I still have one of those rifles, and Dad still has the other. I strongly suspect that he was right all those years ago. I can't think of anything in North America that I'd hesitate to hunt with a well-loaded .30-06 rifle.

Couldn't agree more Guy. I love my 30-06 so much I would love to get another just so I could have two. Still I have a 300 WSM that I adore and used to own a 8mm Rem Mag which was a bad@$$ round! I want to get a 375 H+H and a 45-70 one of these days. They to me are the epitome of epic thumpers!

What kind of 30-06's were those Guy? I did the math the other day and have fired more 30-06 rifles than any other kind and nearly every make of bolt action 30-06 that has been made was on the list.

3170 out of a 250g bthp has left the 340 weatherby and is eye level with the lapua. if lapua or norma or anyone who made decent brass went ahead and offered 338 um that case would take off. always wanted to do a 30-338 um but then again why dump 3500 bucks into a project and have a $1.00 component compromise the whole thing? the 338 um in my opinion was the best of all the um offerings and you didnt have to cram a bullet into its bowels to get it to fit in a magazine. but im sure it will fade into the sunset and go the way of the 6mm rem and the .222.

Love those "thumper" cartridges and rifles guys. JD338 - the photo of your laminated .338 never fails to impress me, I'd like to shoot that rascal someday.

These days my "thumper" is this .375 H&H Number One, which I really like. Have been surprised with the accuracy. Surprised with how well it does at longer ranges. Surprised at the manageable recoil. I think the bear was surprised too...

Earlier I spent nine years using a .45/70 Marlin as my "thumper" - first a ported 18.5" Guide Gun, and later the standard 22" 1895. Had the 425 gr Beartooth "Piledriver Junior" bullets up at 1950 fps, which was a fair amount of thump. Hunted mostly with far less punishing loads.

Can a .30 cal rifle be a "thumper" ? Am sort of thinking that my .30-06 with 200 & 220 gr loads has a fair bit of thump, as does the .300 WSM with a 200, or my old .300 Win mag and of course the .300 RUM with a 200 Nosler had a bit too much thump on my shoulder!

Filmjunkie - Dad's .30-06 rifles were a pair of "sporterized" rifles, a Springfield and a Model of 1917. I still have and regularly shoot the old M1917, it was likely the first center fire rifle I ever shot, back in the mid 1960's. Dad still has the Springfield, that his father built into a fine sporter as a welcome home gift when Dad came back from the service in and after WWII. My son used that M1917 to take a fine bear last fall.

Regards, Guy

Ya gotta love rifles with a family history! I have my grandfather's 788 in 6mm, and my uncle's 725 in .270. I imagine my cousin will want the .270 back when his dad passes, but for now, I can just think about the family history in it.

We had a thread going a while back about "what one rifle would you have for hunting if you could only have one". My choice would be the 338 RUM. It's the XCR and weighs just at 8.2 lbs with scope and sling. Light enough and powerful enough. Handloads up or down. Ground squirrel to cape buffalo. It balances like a prima-ballerina with it's 26" braked barrel and with 300 gr bullets it's got "THUMP" a plenty. I've got bigger hammers but I probably won't draw that darn T-REX tag in my lifetime. I havn't had any brass issues with the 260 A/B at 3120 fps but the elk have had issues with it.
Good Hunting
Greg

I have three rifles that I consider my thumpers. My 45-70, 35 Whelen and 338WM. All three of them are pretty serious thumpers. Maybe not monsters like the RUM's or anything, but the 338 and Whelen deliver the 250gr PT's at 2600 (Whelen) and 2720 (338WM) so I can't ask for too much more out of them. The 45-70 delivers 300's at 2300 and 400's around 1900-2000 so that is my close in whacker. All three of them are plenty capable of large game. Scotty

...the .325 WSM will push a 220gr. @ 2800fps, less than 100fps below the 225gr. .338WM, w/ about a third less powder, so apparently you have a "couple" large holes (.300/ .325 WSM) to fill...

Man, Gene you really do make it hard for a young Marine to save a buck! Trust me, when the time is right, I will have a 325WSM. I like the other WSM's a whole lot and I won't feel complete till I have them rounded out!..

I really like the 220's in your 325. Those look to be excellent in regards to speed and trajectory. Scotty

Guy, now what did you have to go and post that awesome 375 and 500 S&W for! Talk about making a feller sweat a little. That picture of the old style 300gr PT is mighty cool as well. Someday I will own a 375, even if I just have to shoot deer with it! Scotty

Guy,

You have the rifle and handgun thump factor covered quite nicely! 8)

I had a good chuckle here, as for some reason the first thing that popped into my head was the vision of a man driving a sherman tank through some alders; now that would stop a bear!
