Load data for 35 Whelen with 200 AB

2650 fps from a remington custom chop KS

Yup, what Fotis said. I got the same speeds from my CDL. I wasn't a fan of the bullets, decent accuracy but I had two bullets grenade on two deer. It's sorta what sent me to handloading for the old Whelen. They killed the deer just fine and others have done real well with them, they just weren't what I wanted in a Whelen Bullet.

I had such great results from H322 in my Whelen AI with the Barnes 200gr X(58gr) and TTSX (58.5) that I've never tried anything else. I've shot deer sized plains game to elk sized plains game with both of the old Barnes X 250 & 200 with great results. In the heavier bullets, I started out with the 250X and the mid-90's run of the old AA2015br. I now use R15 behind the 250s and 310s with great joy! ha.
I had a friend ( he's passed on now) who used the old Nosler 200BT in Canada on caribou and a problem grizzly. My SIL like the 225 AB in his Whelen AI, I just don't remember what his charge is. Its an elk slayer deluxe! I like the fact that we have all these new options of modern powders...I just need a can of "Extra Time" in order to try them, ha!

Thanks. Yeah I like the Nosler offerings myself. The 225 Partition or AccuBond is a sledge hammer.

Yeah if you can find them. And I think that goes for all the .358 Nosler bullets. Nosler just doesn't make enough of them for the demand they have.

I'm sorta interested in those TTSX 200's in the Whelen. One of the fellas on here has killed a lot of elk with them and being able to run them out at about 2900 is pretty impressive to me.

I've got 200 ABs loaded up so it's unlikely I'll get to the TTSX's, but they seem like a wicked option for speed and penetration if the front end holds up like the pictures show.

Scotty, put a few threw water jugs so we can see what they will do. I haven't heard if gerry has put one in a bear yet but I have read he likes the 200gr Ab a lot.
Also curious if any one has used the Hornady flex tip 200gr out of the Whelen. There web site says they're rated to be good for up to 2000fps out of a rifle. My 35AI would probably put a lot of stress on them.
If Nosler would come out with a solid base 200gr bonded bullet with a flat base or a 200gr PT I would buy them.

Gerry took a bear a few years back with one I think.

I will put them into the jugs though. They are fairly interesting bullets. I'm really tempted to step them up into my 35 Newton. That big guy should really launch them hard. Knowing they'll stand up to the speed makes them a solid option on the elk mountain.

Scotty what is your seating depth off the O-gave? Thinking since the saami oal is the same for the AI as is with the standard it might help me with a starting point with the AB.

No idea. I can't even come close to the rifling with my CDL. Pretty sure the bullet wouldn't be in the case.

It shoots well, so I continue to safeguard it amongst the 70's...

That's pretty typical of a lot of factory Remington barrels in my experience - the rifling starts waaaay out there...

But the doggone things usually shoot well anyway.

I've got no .35 Whelen - so I'll cease my trespass in Whelen Country for now.

Trespass all you like we don't mind. I do believe there has been several 35 Whelens for sale here in your factory rifle brand of choice you could buy and play with the rest of us. If you had one you could use it for physical therapy to get back to shooting the .375 H&H but then you may like it better and the 375 would became a safe Queen

Rodger, I have shot 2 bears with the 200 gr AB. The first ran up a tree so I shot him twice and he fell out of the tree, both bullets exited. The second bear was shot through the shoulders and was recovered in the hide on the far side, it hit bone in both sides and performed well.

Posted these before but here they are.

I have tried to bag both elk and moose with the 200 gr AB but haven't been able to seal the deal yet. Maybe this year..........

gerry, I'm sure I've asked you before but what is the seating depth for the 200gr AB your loading.
Trying to find out where everyone is seating them so I can compare it to what I'm doing.

I tried 3.440" and it was ok but at 3.400" it really perked. Of course your gun may be quite different in what it likes.

In case any was wondering the bullet retained 69% of it's weight and is .660" in diameter.

I would hunt grizzly with that bullet too especially in the fall in the alpine or the berry patches where shots can be a bit longer.

Thanks gerry, so far my best results have been at 3.395". My magazine won't let me go over 3.400" unless I modify it and the bolt stop and ejector what I may have to do eventually.

I doubt you need to go closer TD.. ABs have always seemed to perk better further out.

Gerry, that bullet looks great... Hope my Whelen shoots it. Haven't hunted it in awhile. Might be time to get it out in the woods.

Scotty, as soon as the range clears enough for me to use it I'm going to find out since I have a bunch of loads ready to go and I'm starting with them seated to saami oal.
