I went over to my friends farm to do some long range shooting with him at his 600 and 800 yd steel targets.
A very cool set up, we also got to try out his new shooting bench that he fabricated out of 1/2" steel. This bench weighs 300 lbs, talk about stable!

Here is a picture of the targets from the bench. The one on the left is 600 yds and the one on the right is 800 yds.
The disc are 16" diameter with a 48" square sheet metal backer inside a steel pipe frame.

First up at 600 yds was my buddy with his McMIllian Custom 30-378 Wby with a Light Force 5.5-22x50mm. We had a variable wind from 5-10 mph so it was a real learning curve for me but we got the big 338 RUM loaded up with 300 gr AB's on the disc with the second shot. With a MV of 2742 fps, 10+1 MOA put me on target. I was pretty happy to put one within a couple inches of dead center.

Here is the second round on the 600 yd disc. I also shot the 280 AI loaded up with 140 gr AB's and the VX-3 3.5-10x40mm with the CDS dial was spot on at 600 yds. We also each shot it at water filled milk jugs at 500 yds and center punched the jugs with ease. The CDS dial works well!

Now for the 800 yd disc.
I ended up having to add 1 MOA from my 18+1 drop chart but it was there. My shot is about 4" from dead center on the disc!

The wind did a change up on us but I did come darn clost to center punchiing the disc a second time!

I also shot a big 5 gal jug at 800 yds, slightly high with perfect windage.
My buddy has several of these jugs and we are going to try to recover an 300 gr AB in them the next time we get out.

Had an awesome time out and look forward to going again soon.

Nicely done sir! It is truly fun getting out where you can stretch these big rifles out a bit.

Great shooting JD and a good report too. You guys have an impressive bench set-up to shoot from.

Man, that sounds like a great time.
I need find a friend with an 800 yard range.
At that distance, you could probably get back on the scope in time to see the bullet strike, even on some of the heavier cartridges.

That's good shooting.... the wind will eat your lunch in a hurry at 800....

Gotta love shootin' steel... no matter the range. I have a 22" round gong that we shoot out to 1k or so.... but I'll admit to a pistol steel shooting addiction, love that Clang... Clang... Clang... Clang...

Wow, good for you. I wish that I had a place to shoot out 800 yards! Very happy to hear that your CDS dial works so well. Do you have a different dial for different elevation/temp? or do you use the same dial all the time? I am very curious. I have one on my wife's 257 Roy and plan to send the info to Leupold soon.

Cool stuff buddy! I want to get back out on the 600 yard range but other things have me busy

Nice to see the the rifles shooting so well. I can see the speed goats shaking already  . You need to capture on of those big 300 AB's so we can see what they look like after a jug test!

Nice job Jim,
It sure is nice to be able to stretch the legs of those rifles. I can't wait to try the 300 NABs in a 338. I picked up 200 2nds when I was in Bend a couple of weeks ago. I just picked up another Win 70 in 300Rum to use as a base action for a 338RUM or Edge. Thanks for the data and info you've run up.

That is something I have always wanted to do!

I also need to find a friend with some land who will allow me to do this. Great Shooting!

Very nice my friend, very nice. I wish I had a handy place to do such shooting around here cause it sure is fun.
