Tomorrow is going to be dedicated to a full day of sitting on a gas line that is planted in rye grass and the long shot is 620yds. Now it will be 36-43 degrees and 70 percent humidity and that means with the little wind it will certainly feel much colder.

Now outside of the conditions I will be hunting in which also requires a make shift blind I have not received my 257Wby yet so it is out of this hunt. That leaves me with my 30-06 and I will limit my long shot to 400yds. This is a very do-able shot considering my load and practice but I will miss not having that extra I would be able to get with the 257Wby.

Tomorrow should be interesting and if the shot is longer than 400yds, I hope I will be able to move out of my blind into the woods and move closer. I will slip to the edge of the woods when I am at a distances that will allow me a shot and hopefully the deer will not have left the gas line before I can get close enough to take the shot.

Hey bullet, don't underestimate the 06' capability. 600 yards is piece of cake for this cartridge. A 168 grain Ballistic Silver Tip at around 2800fps will have 1800 fps left and 1200 ft/lbs of energy at 600 yards. With 100 yards zero, you'll have 84" drop at that distance. I killed 2 deer at these distance with my 280 Remington using 150 grain Ballistic Tip at around 2875 fps. Both deer drop where they stand. My buddy killed one deer also with his 308 at over 600 yards using the 165 grain Hornady SST. Yeah the Weatherby will shoot flatter but the 06 with good bullet will do just fine. Good luck!

So... How'd it go???

It was freezing, the wind blowing about 18mph and then to make it worse the wind shifted and started blowing from the opposite direction and was sending my signature right down that gas line. So I got up went to talk to my friend the Game Warden and he showed me couple of places to go. I was fixing to go to one of them and my phone range and my 257Wby came in, so you could say the 257Wby called me out of the woods. I am going back tomorrow.

So how did it go?

Windy, sometimes rain, got up to 77 degrees, bucks here are just not moving much at all. The young bucks aren't even chasing them at the moment and the big bucks will start chasing does even after the young ones start. It is suppose to be cooler Monday and I hope they start moving into the rut. I just have to keep going and be patient and I could use a little luck right now. Even went this morning for 4 hours but today was the same as yesterday. I might be skunked this year although I believe I have a good chance if I keep trying for the next two weeks. Until you have hunted whitetail in South Mississippi on public land you have not experienced the unusual and the unusual is seeing a buck. When I lived in Vicksburg and hunted the delta I averaged 5 deer a year. I count my self lucky to kill one buck a year. It is thick with a ton of pressure from many hunters. If I do not get one this year it will be the first in 16yrs I have lived here but I a sure you that I work for my deer here in South Mississippi. Why do you think I go off on hunting trips when I can afford them.

Best of luck, hope you get one.

Thanks russ808, I am going in the morning again and will be hunting all day. The first two hours it is suppose to be raining but will clear by 8:30 and then be in the fifties the rest of the day.
