Long time lurker, first time poster

Sask,
No not a lefty. I have seen the Colonel's got a great following here. I have always fancied a .358 bore and a have on a few occasions almost pulled the trigger on the BLR in .358 Win and at one time had a chance at a 660 Mag in 350 Rem Mag that I wish I had bought. Being fan of the WSM case(I have two 300 WSM rifles) a 35 Sambar would be cool too. IF the rumors are true that Nosler sent SAMII drawings for everything up to .375 on the new case design I would be very interested in a 35 Nosler to go with my 26.

Me too, It would basically duplicate the 358 STA without a belt I think. Would have a big punch on both ends but a 250gr PT at close to 2900 would take anything I would ever want to hunt I think.

I have a 35 Newton and run 250 PTs at 2820 or so from a 20.5" barrel. It is a legitimate thumper. Really love the cartridge. It'll send 225's downrange at 2950 as well. Very versatile cartridge. Easy to load for as well.

there are some that say that the 35 Newton is the "perfect" .358 cartridge, in design and function. Those are impressive velocities out of a short barrel.

I'm not sure I'd ever say perfect but it's very good for my uses. Brass is easy to make from the 375 Ruger, they last forever and it functions well for me. If I rebarrel I'd go to a 23-24" barrel but I believe I'll run it like this for awhile. It's real handy and I shoot it well.

preacher,
I have a few outdoor options near by and both my indoor ranges have 100yd lanes. This rifle and its concept was for a purely hunting rig. Outside of practice, sight in, and load development I have never been a benchrest shooter.
A 100yd indoor range would be sweet! As much as it rains in Florida that is one big blessing for a rifle shooter! ha I too am not a benchrester, though I have learned a lot from the looney benchrest hand loaders techniques! :) I've really enjoyed hunting with flat shooters made up on quick handling rifles, best of both worlds for me! I grew up hunting down the gulf coast ( between Houston and Beaumont,TX) from you so the benefit of a flat shooter to "thread the bullet" through a palmetto frond or youpon hedge has put meat on the table and ruined many a varmints day!

P.S. I can't find the scripture reference right now but I believe the Lord uses a 35 Whelen Ackley Improved...this was after P.O. showed up....maybe? (y)

Scotty, I thought the 35 Newton was made up on a belted case, i.e. just a longer 358 Norma?

Shooters World, in Tampa is the best. Several 100 yrd lanes and there is a camera above the targets and an 9" LCD screen at each position so that you can verify your shots without running the target all the way back in. Its a state of the art facility. it can handle up to 50BMG as well.

No sir. I'm actually not completely sure what Newton used as the parent case. The 375 Ruger is necked down with the shoulder moved back about a .1 or so. No other changes. If I had to guess Ruger used the Newton case and blew the shoulder forward and necked it up. It's a touch smaller in diameter than a 404 case and a little bigger than a Win Mag case.

Oh yeah, I was thinking of a ".350 Ackley magnum" or some name like that. It was a shortened/blown out/40% shoulder on the H&H case in .35 caliber. An old guy had one on a 1903 action one time out at Lee Kay (the local NRA range with Banker's Hours!) and he let me shoot it. Brutal recoil in his set up, ha.
The "Perfect 35 caliber", of course, is the one the Lord uses ( psst 35 Whelen Ackley Improved)...
