Well it looks as if my 280 AI will not be done in time for my early November elk hunt this year. So I'm taking my trusty 338 WM. I've shot elk with the 225 AB, and 225 TSX and like them both. But for some reason I'm wanting to try something "new". Not that the AB or tsx havn't been great, just wanting to do some tinkering I guess. This is more of a meat tag than anything. It is an any elk tag, but a guy still has the chance of getting a decent bull. The biggest I have ever saw in the unit was about 340. He was 500 yards away and I was 14, if I only knew then what I know now!

Have been thingking about the 225 PT, 200 ET (shot a buck with it last year), 210 sirocco II, or maybe a Hornady something. Other than the 200 ET my gun has not seen any of these other bulllets. I have a hard time getting closer to the lands than .1" with the AB, so there will be some jump.

Whats your thoughts? Any of you guys ever used any of these? Will be hunting very open country, and shots could be out to 500.

I've used most of these, but not in the 338 WM. The Hornady IB certainly works on deer. It opened much more violently than I anticipated. I've used the Partition on elk, moose and mule deer; the bullet precisely what it is advertised to do. I've used the E-Tip on moose, and it performed flawlessly. I've used a number of Sciroccos. I do find them to be somewhat more finicky than other bonded core bullets. However, there are some rifles that prefer these over everything (and I do mean everything) else. I believe we are living in a wonderful period when there are a variety of excellent bullets available for the serious hand loader.

The 210 gr PT is the classic load of rthe 338 Win Mag. The 250 gr AB would be a hammer.

Id try a 225g SST. They are cheap, have a decent BC, usually an accurate bullet, and going 338 WM speeds, I wouldn't worry to much about them blowing up at close range, yet it will still certainly open up at 500.

Dr. Mike called it right. There is no better hunting bullet than the Nosler Partition I have been using the partitions for a long time. They do what they are advertised to do every time. The 225 would be great for elk.

well had a lot of time to think about it today in the combine during wheat harvest. Thinking I'm going to try the 225 SST or IB, and the 225 PT. If both shoot well, I'll more than likely use the PT, but load up a bunch of the SST to practice with and shoot random things around the farm. I'll keep u guys posted on some load development here after harvest. Might even get to test some bullets on a black bear.
