Having myself a ball with QuickLoad!!!!!
I've played with this for hours on end...and I'm still going, lol.
"Splitting hairs...a riflemans favorite way to pass time"
A while back, when I was deciding what I wanted my new rifle chambered in I had it narrowed down to a 7mm of some sort...did all kinds of research on 7mm Rem Mag, 280 Ackley, 280 Remington, and 7mm-08...
Well, I've spent the last couple of weeks doing the same thing with QuickLoad...people often compare the 7mm Rem Mag and the 280 Ackley, and an argument often ensues about "loaded to the same pressure...".
Loaded to the same pressure as the Ackley (65,000 psi)...the 7mm Rem Mag is loaded way past its SAAMI limit of 61,000. The reason the 7mm Rem mag has a pressure limit that low is because its one of worst, if not the worst, rounds for random pressure spikes...now don't don't shoot the messenger, I didn't make it that way!!! Its a fine round, and has proven itself the world over...I nearly ordered my new rifle in 7mm Rem Mag...the biggest reason I didn't was the barrel life, thats been my one and only "dislike" of the 7mm Rem Mag ever since I knew what one was.
More to the comparison...loaded full tilt to 65k psi, the 280 Ackley can get REALLY, REALLY close to 7mm Rem Mag performance...like 50 fps close with proper component selection.
Next is the 280 Remington...SAAMI has it spec'd at 60,000 psi, and I expect most folks know why (the old autoloaders it was designed around)...I believe it can be safely loaded hotter, up to around 63,000 psi without getting too far overboard in regards to bolt thrust...and loaded to that level, it gets really close to 280 Ackley performance...within 50 fps...with proper component selection.
And then the 7mm-08...short, stubby, 61,000 psi pressure limit...it holds its own against the previously mentioned bigger rounds...falling short of the Ackley by about 150 fps in the same barrel length...there are times when I sorta wish I'd gotten a 7mm-08 (like when I see the price of 280 Ackley brass), but then I remember how much I've always wanted a 280 Ackley, lol...
I know I haven't said anything here that hasn't been said a few hundred times before...I just thought I'd share the process of how I came to the conclusion to get the Ackley...not trying to say the other rounds are "not as good", or that the Ackley is any "better"...but it is a very nice "all around, general purpose caliber"...fully capable of 800 yard hunting, if one were into that sort of thing...and just as capable of targets at twice that distance.
QuickLoad didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know here, but it spelled it out very clearly...by the numbers...very glad I bought the program, and I expect I'll waste many hours tinkering with it.
