I have Federal brass, WLR primers, IMR 4895, and 168 grain bullets. Can someone provide me with a safe load for my m1 shooting 30-06 rounds?

I would use the mid range loads as a MAX.

I have shot 45gr of IMR-4895 pushing 168gr Sierra MatchKings, HPBTs and Hornady A-Max bullets with good results. I would try to keep my velocity between 2550 and 2700 fps. I would start at 43.0gr and work up to 46.0gr max.

Even though the -4895's are the preferred powder for Garands I have found IMR-4064 to work best with my Garands. Slight preference towards the Hornady 150gr FMJ bullet.

I have some 4064 but grabbed the 4895 because it looks like a great powder for the 30-30. I would like to get some dies and bullets and load up some 30-30 rounds to play with my dad's and great grandpa's Winchester 94s. My m1 is not the most accurate so I hope I can hit a home run with the 4895.

IMR 4064 is a great garand powder too. For the most part, thats the most accurate powder that most guys report.

If you can get access to a Hornady 7th Ed. manual (or 8th), they have load data specific to the M1.

The issue that makes this somewhat tricky is the PORT pressure needs to be acceptable, which is far trickier to achieve than CHAMBER pressure limits we're used to working with. 4895 is an appropriate powder for the M1, for sure. I have a load somewhere in my notes for a 165BTSP and IMR4064. Just need to find it.

What you very clearly do NOT want to have happen is an excess port pressure. This will not cause any catastrophic failure, unless you REALLY overdo it. Instead, it will start the process of bending your operating rod, until it binds and can't move freely. Then you're condemned to buying a replacement op rod. They are not cheap.

You can also get an adjustable gas cylinder plug. I have not used them, but a lot of Garand shooters recommend them. I may get them for my M1's at some point. They allow far more freedom in what you load because they vent excess pressure at the gas cylinder and prevent over-taxing the op rod.

Many M1s with a worn bore will shoot best with flat based bullets such as the Speer 150 or 165gr SP. The Rem 150 and 165 psp bullets are also a great option if you can find any. IMR or H4895 are the old standard for the Garand. Hor also lists data for W748 which is a fine powder in the 30-30 as well. As posted above, 4064 or Varget are the new favorites based on this same question I asked on the CMP forums. 46 gr of 4064 is considered max for the Garand so use that load level as a guide. Powders in burn rate between 3031 and H414 are apropriate in these rifles.

Thanks for the help guys. I plan on loading up a few this weekend. My rifle is not match. It is a 1941 actions and barrel. The wood stock is birch not walnut. I would like to replace that someday. Man I have a lot of wants!!!! I try to shoot the m1 at least a few times a year. Grandpa served in Europe and landed D-Day +3 and has a Purple Heart and 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. He was there for 9 months before coming home with a lot of extra metal in his body. He is 88 and acts like he is 20. He is my hero.

Many thanks to your grandfather for his service in a very difficult place and time.

A '41 action and barrel??? Man, that's pretty cool. Odd it'd not have been rebuilt following the war, but no matter, that's a cool gun. Lockbar sights?

It has been rebuilt. The numbers are close. I would have to look them up again but I think they are with in a year of each other. I will try to post pictures in the next day or two.

That is the kinda hero every man should have WT.. We would be alot better off if our kids knew more of these men who gave so much and asked for nothing in return!

Sorry to derail the thread a little, but our WWII/Korea/Vietnam Vet's deserve so much more than they have received.

I agree with you on the vets. Those men and women are amazing. Tough is what they are. Grandpa does not talk about the war and does not think he is a hero. He just did his job. My final college paper was about his time in the Army. I was able to document his travels (march) to the Rhine. He was one of the first to cross it and then was hit for the last time 3 days later. He went 17 days without a bath or a nigth of sleep under a roof.
