I have this old gun. It is a International Harvester Garand bought from a state/county police department about 20+ years ago. It has all the normal cartouches from a garand from this maker but it also has a square with dots in it. I am wondering if this is an arsenal inspection marking. The gun has no papers left but from what I can see this gun has harvester cartouche on the stock and the harvester name stamp on the receiver. It has a springfield armory barrel. the only marking I can not identify is the square with dots in it. Can anyone shed light on this marking? The gun is in shootable condition and is not pristine in any sense of the word but it well taken care of and all original as bought.

You have a nice rifle. Harvestors bring a huge premium vs other garands, even post Korea rebuilds which yours likely is. I believe some Garands were also built up from Harvestor receivers using SA or WRA parts when Harvestor couldn't fullfill their contracts. Yours could be one of those. You'd have to decode the dating on the barrel to find out.

The cmp forums or another dedicated milsurp forum such as surplusrifle.com would have your answer if you can't find it here. I think the cmp site also has a tutorial on different variants and markings linked on their site.

Does the square have an eagle in it? More than likely it is the DAS cartouche that is worn. It should either be 3/8 or 5/8" and have an eagle with three stars in the box. The dots could be worn stars as well.

Is this on the left side of the stock?

Pics?
