M70 358 Norma

The perfect rifle has always been the one I just can't quite afford in the caliber I just can't quite make my mind up on. But I keep trying

That just means you need one in every caliber imaginable!

My only .300 mag was a .308 Norma when I bought my first .338 Win Mag. At that time, the .358 Norma had 200 and semi spitzer, 250 gr factory ammo availible here from NormaVapenFabrik and was more popular than it is now. I could have bought a factory .358 Norma Mag rifle in a Husqvarna or Sako Finnbear then. I never considered the .35 Whelan because is was a wildcat with no ammo then and I wanted the Win Mag case for velocity and a standard factory chamber. Actually at that time, I also wanted the 4500 fp of ME without shooting a .375 Ouch & Ouch which I already had one of. This was only 10 years after the .264, .300 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag came to market. The .338 WM killed a zillion bears up north and were the cat's meow then! Actually what I really wanted was a .340 Wea Mag and sometimes after 1962 I finally got one. That pretty well gets me where I want to be to being elk, DRT! Using the best of the best in the .338 mags that were availible 20 years ago.

It finally came down to which factory loads and bullets were availible. This was in the late 1960's and the 250 gr big game .358 Norme bullet was about all that you could get in .358 then and when compared to 200, 210, 225, 250, 275, 300 (just to name a few) factory ammo and bullets for the .338 Mag availible then, it was an easy choice. Nothing has really changed with that for me. I still favor the .338 for bullets and factory rifle models chambered. Lost interest in .358's after getting a .340 Wea Mag.

The .338 Federal is enough of an oddbell but again, I have lots of .338 bullets weights availble and .308 cases carried in any gun store that I go to. Just being practical again!

I just never developed an itch for .358 calibers when I was busy killing elk just fine with .338 win and .340 Wea Mags.
