Makeover done-35 Whelen

Love how that looks, congrats on a great gun. Any idea how much a McSwirly like yours would weigh? I believe you said it was a Mountain rifle style.

Thanks. Gerry I'm not sure of the weight on the stock but the rifle comes in at just over 8 lb. Thats with the Shilen #3. I don't know if i would go lighter with the Whelen.
With all the Whelens out there, I hope we get a chance to get the Whelen wagon rolling once the seasons start.

Swirleys generally go between 30-32 ounces, depending on pattern. Obviously, an A5 will weigh more than a Compact or Remington Mountain Rifle.

Thanks, it is nice to know these things for when my 375 Ruger laminate stock needs replacing. Bill, thats a good weight for a Whelen, hopefully you keep this thread updated with how your final loads end up.

Sure thing, buddy. I don't know if McMillan will recommend a standard fill on a .375, though...

Seems like yours is shooting really well. I took the Whelen out for awhile today. Just to verify zero. Did pretty danged good for sitting around all Summer with no workout.

My chrono came back from service so I got a chance to do some more testing today.
I did 3 shots with 60.5 R-15 at 3.450. Chrono read 2515, 2520, 2531? Grouping was there but the velocity was slower than expected. I then shot the 225 Partitions. I’m still working with them. 60 Grains read 2515, 2545, 2544, and a little over an inch. I then switched to the 300 Winmag with the 180AB. I’m working on the OL length with them too. I tried 75 Grains of R-22 which I had used with Sierra’s which shot well but the AB is going to need more time. I then went back to the Whelen and did 2 more on top of the 3 earlier and it was right there. I did not want to try 61 grains until I saw where I was with the chrono. When I got home I loaded up some AB’s with 61 to test next chance out. I’ll work with the Partitions later. I’m a little surprised at the lower than expected velocity.

Bill I saw that myself. The last pound of RL15 I bought seems very slow. My usual load that runs 2700+ was now running mid 2500's. I thought it was my chrono but maybe it wasn't?

Is your can one of the newer RL15 cans. Meaning, does it have the new label?

Your gun is certainly very accurate. I found the same with RL 15 so switched to Varget which so far seems more consistant from lot to lot. In my case it went the other way, my 250 gr Speer G.S. bullets were all of a sudden doing 2700 fps and a sticky bolt lift  without being able to chronograph I would have never have known what had gone wrong. Loads with 225 gr TSX bullets had to be reduced over two grains to get the same speed and accuracy.

I've never had the problem in the past. Need to see if I can get a five lb jug of the old stuff.

Your load is not that slow, Bill. It is, however, accurate. You can increase your charge by half-grain increments to increase velocity until you find where you should stop. With the accuracy of that AB load, I'd be comfortable tackling moose and grizzlies here. In fact, I have done so.

I did just buy a new 5 lb container. I checked my notes when I worked up the loads with the other bottle. With that, 59.5 gave me the same reading. I never got a chance to chrono the 60 and 60.5 loads. I'm going to try 61 grains but I may just go with the 60.5 for now. Over the winter I am going to try varget. I just bought an 8 pounder for the 308.

It'll be interesting to see how you make out Bill. I am kinda in the same boat. Do I go up in charge weight or try another powder. Hard to go away from RL15 as it has worked so well in the past.

If you have the room in the case I would increase your charge until you hit the same velocity as before. When I adjusted the charge down in my example earlier when I hit the same speed as before the accuracy returned to what it was earlier.

I am going to try it Gerry.. Got a few more loaded and I wanna make sure before I start running higher.

Rifle looks real nice!

I went with the Shilen #3 on my 358win and could decide on 20" or 21" so I split it to 20.5". If I make a 35whelen I think I will do the same as you #3 at 23" in SS. I put a B&C metalist on a 223 and was very happy with it so I mite do the same. A VX3 2.5-8 would work great for me and the winny wears a 1.5-5 for closer work.

Watching the results for all the new whelen loaders closly, even my 7600/35whelen is gonna need some ammo soon.

I'm not sure if you have done it but why not start a thread and show us your guns, they sound neat, I'm sure lots of us would love to see them. In the Whelen it's hard to beat the 225 gr AccuBond IMHO.

Scope problem. I was cleaning up the rifles and went to turn down the power on the Minox and the whole back of the scope spun instead of just the power ring. I'm leaving this weekend to go out of state for a week so it looks like when I get back the Minox is coming off and is going to be sent in for service. I'm giong to pull the Elite 4200 off another rifle and put it on this. I thought I was done at the range, sighted in and ready to go. More work.. Only got 3 weeks when I get back.
