Match Grade Primers

Soon I will need a match primer for loading the 222/223.

I have used Federal 210M my only LRP, 205 used in my hornet with AA1680, and CCI500 primers used with Lilgun in my hornet. I like the small packaging of the CCI BR4 over the 205M. I buy a case at a time so any favorites 205M, 7 1/2, BR4?

I bought a 700 SPS-SS in 223rem if its a tite shooter I will just re-stock it with a bell & Carlson, but if not a Shilen Match Grade in 222rem is what I realy want. At that time I will then buy dies, reddington type S match neck die set I tinking. Oh I have a VX3 4.5-14x40mm LR and Talley fixed rings for it. All should be here by friday. This is my target/varmit gun and I will reload for accuracy. This should be a fun gun tieing my reloading with target shooting. The hornet is fine but this a 300 yard rig and cases should last a long time if I am not pressing the pressure evelope.

I am gonna concintrate on berger 52gr HPV and Rem 50gr powerlokt bullets at first and depending on which cartridge H322/Benchmark.

If available, I like to keep Federal Match primers on hand, but they are still hard to get. CCIs are usually available, so I use a fair amount of them, too.

No offense, but I hope your new .223 is a real dog.

Mmmmm... .222. Gotta live vicariously through others, you know.

My favorite small match primer is the Remington 7 1/2. I have great success with them in everything from the .223 Remington to a couple of 7 BR handguns I own.

My buddy on the other hand thinks the Fed 205M is the only way to go.

You may just have to play around to see what your gun likes best.

Save yourself some money and get you some WOLF small rifle magnum primers. They are the most consistent primer I have seen and they are dirt cheep compared to the "match" primers.

Last summer, I tested the Federal Match 215m primers in 338 win mag, 300 win mag and 7mm mag. (1 custom rifle and 2 OTC rifles) Not a single group of reloads with different powders and seating depths showed any type of improvement or chrono consistency (amongst their respective groups and against other groups) to justify the extra costs.

The standard Federal magnum primers performed the same. I could be very very very wrong in this discernment but is not the difference between match primers and standard primers just ""who"" performs the work making these primers? Supposedly the primer techie who is making the best on that day or has a reputation of making the better consistent batches gets to declare his made primers as "Match".

Again correct me if I am wrong, but I think there might be some Kool-Aid here. :wink:

You have it about right 338. It is my understanding that those primers that test out giving the most consistent velocity in the lot trials go as match primers in some companies. CCI must use the best guy process because they use the little B on the cups for their BR primers. I have tried all the sizes of Wolf primers and they make very accurate ammo. You need to learn how to seat them FIRM or you can have misfires because they have a harder cup and the anvil sits up a little more than most primers but when you really bottom the primer out they shoot great.

I have CCI BR primers, and with them I can get 3/4 inch groups pretty consistently.

With the standard primers I can only get 3/4 inch groups. I also have some magnum primers that I haven't tried yet.

I don't want to say the BR primers for me make no difference, but I would say the difference isn't dramatic.

I run CCIBR2's for LR stuff, and CCIBR4's for SR things. The CCI250's are used for my magnums and ball powders sometimes. I don't get overly concerned about primers. I haven't noted large differences or reasons to try others. Scotty

I have done a little testing and am unable to see much difference in accuracy with the different primers, including the BR. My smith gave me a couple of hundred a year of so ago, and after I used them I did not replace them. I use CCI and Federal, the Federal are getting old so I am using them for almost everything I shoot right now.

There are rifles that benefit from the consistency of match primers. I do use them when making many of my loads. However, if a load shoots well with other primers, I'm quite likely to simply use them.

My limited experience tells me that standard large Rifle CCi's work better than the magnums even. OF the variables I can control the "nut behind the trigger" has more to do with it than primer will. But thats just me. My hats off to you guys who can find the difference. CL

I have been happy with 210M for the price and think 205M will be the same. Their extra price isn't much. Now BR4's are pricey but their marked with the B and a case stores easy their packaging is smaller than federals.

My under standing is with LRP the cup hieght and thickness is stardard acrossed the board. Now thats not ture for SRP, a 6 1/2 is kin to the 205 with thin cups while the 7 1/2 and 205M are thicker for higher pressure cartridges are taller and are hotter (brisince I think). Remington only uses their 6 1/2 in smaller lower pressure cartridges so that seems right. The match primers are just more consistint and as long as I am buying a case thats the way I will go. I do not like lot to lot veriences or primer shortages.

I have heard nightmares about wolf primers so I am not going their. I will stick to US made primers and ammo for now.

I'll second that... I've tried them all in my Rem 700VS 223. I like the brass color of the primers too...
