I like to match my rifles to it's companies cartridges.
Example, a M70 Winchester in .243, .270, or .300 Win Mag.
Or a M700 Remington in 6mm, 25-06, 7mm Rem Mag.
For me a M70 Win in 7mm Rem Mag is just wrong, I can't do it.
Of course makes like Savage, Sako, Ruger (not all Rugers with the RCMs) mostly don't have their own cartridge lines so anything goes with them.
Nothing really wrong with doing it I just think it screws up the order in the universe.

Nope. My universe is all messed up. A favorite rifle of mine is a Remington 700 chambered in a .308 Winchester.

The planets continue to spin about in my universe as I often carry a Model 70 chambered in .280 Remington and another chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum. I understand symmetry, and I confess to being somewhat obsessive-compulsive, but each of us has our own hang-ups (I won't discuss my predilections). Mine don't focus on which cartridge is represented by which rifle.

I have heard of doing this with factory ammunition i.e. Winchester ammo for 243, 270, 308, 300 Win Mag, and Remington ammo for 6mm, 280, 7mm Rem Mag but never the rifles. I suppose that even though Winchester and Remington would rather take a whipping than to submit to chambering one another's cartridges, it seems to me that pride in workmanship would make them want to work just as hard to make their guns shoot the other guys cartridges as their own. Because if a Remington 308 can outshoot a Winchester everytime, which 308 are you going to buy? Haha I love these prideful feuds between gun makers, it keeps them on top of the game and puts us in possession of some fine over the counter rifles. My universe isn't too bad, the 25-06 is a Model 700, my 300 Mag is a Winchester and my 300 Savage is a Savage but I do have some which are universalists i.e. a Winchester 30-06 and a Savage 308, a Ruger 22-250, oh i could go on but I wont because you all are the same way!

Sorta. I have never been a big fan of the .270 Winchester, but I always thought the perfect match was an M70 Featherweight, same with M700 Mountain rifles in .280. But all three of my .270s are M700s (well, one's a 725).

I actually think the perfect home for a 6mm Remington (well, outside of a Ruger #1) is an M70 with it's longer mag box. That's also the reason I prefer M70s in the WSMs. For whatever reason, I don't really consider getting an M700 in anything bigger than a .35 Whelen (maybe an STA).

I would have no trouble getting Nolan (my son) an M70 FWT Compact in 7-08, just as I would have no trouble getting him M700 Compacts in .243 or .308.

I've pretty much put a hold on any more 700s until Big Green get's their QC act together (a couple of Mountain Rifles in .280 or '06 would be the exception).

If NY state passed their proposed microstamping bill, you could get your wish.
Remington would have to move their production facility to a new state, and with any luck they would put in a new state of the art facility. I'd sure like to see them move out here to Colorado.

Yeah, I can't really think of anything that is really paired for the most part, I have a 7RM, 7WSM, 270WSM, 264WM, and 338WM in M70's, a 243 and 35 Whelen in M700's, a 308 and 300WM in a Ruger, 358 Win in a Browning, and a 22-250 in a TC. I also have the ultimate match of the Winchester 94 and 30-30. The other lever guns are Marlins in 35 Rem and 45-70.. I guess those are paired pretty well.. No real method to my madness to be honest. I'm not so sure it's the equipment that's the problem, I think it's more an attitude, cut costs (QC) as much as possible, and quality be damned.

Yea, but look what happened to Winchesters quality when they moved to a new plant in a Right To Work state. I think that may of helped with the attitude adjustment you were referring to.

But as for the original post, NOPE, I don't care if the headstamp matches the name on the barrel. Nore do I care if it matches the name on the ammo.

You could be right. Without sinking to talking politics, new machinery and a motivated, dedicated workforce have done wonders for Winchester.

makes not much sense to me, if you research the cartridges, some wildcatter developed them but all the makers did was started loading them commercialy, so ya want a 25/06, it was developed by AO Nieder in 1920, and picked up by remington in 1969, as is the case with most of todays cartridges.

I think even the WSMs were created by Rick Jamison, correct?

That would make me happy!

I would really look into the 6mm Rem if Winchester started chambering it. Scotty

Great comment.
It must be hard to stomach for a gunmaker to stamp a competitors name on the side of one of their own barrels.

I bet the dollar signs help them get over it.

For sure. I doubt that most rifle manufacturers even think about who developed a cartridge or who put their name on it if they believe there is a market for it.
