Measuring groups

What is the right way to measure a group? If I put 3 or five shots in a half inch circle I call it a half inch group. After looking at some of the groups posted on this site, I see that this isn't the case. If understand correctly, to shoot a .5 group, the widest point of the group is no more than .5 inches on either side of the center of the group ? I really don't measure groups that often, but I would like to know the correct way of doind it.

Thanks

live to shoot,

Measure the greatest dimension of your group, then subtract the diameter of the bullet you're using from that value. That will give you an accurate "center to center" measurement.

So — if the maximum dimension of your group is measured from a hole at 9:00 and one at 3:00, measure from the left side of the 9 hole and the right side of the 3 hole.

If that dimension is, say, 1.5 inches, and you're shooting a 30 caliber bullet, subtract .308 in from 1.5 inches, and you've got your group size, center of 9 hole to center of 3 hole.

You should also understand that there are two ways to think about group size.

The first way is simply inches: you shot a 1 inch group at 100 yards; a 2 inch group at 200 yards, a 3 inch group at 300 yards.

The second way is minute of angle, which is approximately 1 inch at 100 yards. If you use this standard, then a 1 MOA group would be aboout 1 in at 100 yards, 2 inches at 200 yards, 3 inches at 300 yards, etc.

Yes in other words. Measure the two furthest points (edge to edge) , then subtract diameter.
