I was planning to take my girls fishing, but the weather turned south as a storm blew through. Oh well, thought I'd make the most of it so I dropped by my friends house and asked if he wanted to go hunting in the morning(His first time). He was excited about it so it was game on! Got all my gear together that night and we left town at 6AM the next morning. We got a little bit of a late start as we were going to a new area I wanted to try and we were having a hard time finding a public road that would get us access to the public land I wanted to hunt despite the BLM map and GPS I was glued to

We finally found a winner and it payed off  The road got bad enough that if it was any worse we would have needed 4wd so we decided to park the truck and walk in the rest of the way. We came up to a small gulley in the hills with a creek running down it and sure enough about 50yds away on the right heading up the gulley is a black pig! I didn't even have my .243 loaded although I did have the dbm loaded. Slam the mag in and get the scope on him and he is looking like he's headed out. I made a semi-rushed shot on him as he was quartering away and it put him down but not out so I made a follow-up shot aimed right between his shoulders as he was now facing away from and up-hill. That settled it and we both high-fived and started talking about how we were BBQing tonight

Rifle was a Savage 12VLP in .243 w/Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15 tactical. Ammo was Nosler Custom 90grn E-tip 3200fps muzzle velocity. I recovered both slugs that you can see in the pictures below. Estimated impact velocity was 3100fps! I have to say that pigs seem pretty tough compared to deer(Which is what most of my experience is based on), but so are the E-tips. We didn't weigh the pig, but we both estimated it to be 100-125lbs. It was a male and clearly was a youngin. Oh well, good eatin'. Skinning revealed that the first shot hit in front of the right rear leg and angled forward ending up in the neck. One neck vertebrae was smashed. That is the slug that is missing the "petals". The second shot hit slightly to the left of center between the shoulders. Shattered the left shoulder blade, went directly through the heart leaving a 3/4" hole along with several other lacerations and ended up in the brisquet under the skin. Seems like decent performance to me, although I am thinking about stepping up to something bigger. One thing I noticed is that at that velocity, the E-tips opened up FAST like a ballistic tip doing a lot of damage in the first several inches but they obviously still held together after that and gave some good penetration.View attachment Pic-05292011-001.jpgView attachment 05292011337.jpgView attachment 05292011338.jpgView attachment P1010204.JPGView attachment P1010203.JPG

Congrats on the pig! That 90 gr ET looks to give the .243 a bit of a foot in the door for bigger tougher game! Those are impressive little bullets.

Thanks, it was my first pig! Now that I know where to find them, I'm sure it won't be my last. I'm sure that the first shot would have been fatal, I wasn't taking any chances though....lol.

I don't blame you for the second shot. I'm a big fan of the "shoot till they quit moving" method. Some day I hope to go on a pig hunt, and hopefully I will have to leave Oregon to do it. Don't want those darn things running around up here!

Congratulations on a fine pig. The picture of the bullets is a confidence builder. Thanks for a great account of a successful hunt.

Thanks guys! I won't be forgetting this one :) I need to adjust my weapon choice however. They are in the thick stuff. Thinking 12 gauge with rifled barrel and sabot slugs or put together a Savage in .358 Winchester....either one ought to put 'em down fast

Great shooting and excellent pictures of the recovered slugs. Seems that 243 made ham in a big way.

How was the BBQ'ed pig. Kinda hungry thinking about it! Scotty

BBQ pig was good! My buddy has some pic's, maybe I can get them from him. We smoked both racks of ribs and one of the loins/backstrap for 4 1/2hrs. Tougher than store bought, but hey....it's wild game.

Sweet, I don't mind a little toughness in order to have wild game. Wished I could hunt enough to totally write off the danged grocery store. Nothing like eating something you took yourself! Scotty

I make every effort to have a freezer filled with wild game, Scotty. Come on up and we'll throw a couple of steaks on the grill. It is 21 and sunny, so this would be a good day to sit on the back patio and grill.

Mike I cannot wait to visit your place! I tell ya, my wife hears more about BC than anything from me. She asked me why I wasn't going this year? I told her, I didn't know that was an option. I will be up there soon enough though. Scared that I won't wanna come backto be totally honest though! Scotty

Congratulations on your pig hunt. That one will be good eating. The E-Tips you recovered look pretty good.

Anytime you need venison, just say the word. I usually have a pretty good supply in the freezer.

Nice pig. Young and tender. The e-tips expanded nicely. I may have to give them a try in my 243. How are they for accuracy?
Congrats on a nice hunt.

I have two boxes of E-tips waiting for me to work up a load in my rifle. I ran out of time however and just bought a box of Nosler ammo. The accuracy in my gun was not very good unfortunately. Good enough to go hunting, 2" or so at 100yds. They must be a bit finicky as the cheap Federal power shock ammo I bought to break in the barrel was shooting under 1" right off the bat. Just need to find a load/seating depth that they agree with in my rifle is all. I'm moving up to a 7mm magnum or a 12 gauge with slugs for wild hogs. Why? Because I can  I have no doubt my .243 with the E-tips would totally wreck a deer's day however.

Once you get your load for the 243, let me know. Might give them a try. Seem like a pretty good mushrooming bullet and really help that 243 penetrate also. Needs all the help it can get on the tougher animals. Scotty
