Well, we are into the final days of the MI Late Doe Season. I put my daughter's boyfriend in one of my stands and advised him that he would see deer between 8:00-9:00 AM, what direction they would come from and where they would be going to bed. I have hunted this spot for 17 years so I have a pretty good idea how they move. My daughter also went out to assist in the hunt. I heard him shoot at 8:17 AM and knew that I had teeded up this hunt pretty well. He used a Remington 870 Express Magnum, 12 ga loaded with Lightfield slugs. Shot distance was 50 yds. He had a high shoulder shot and dropped her in her tracks.
We met back at the house, got the details of the hunt and was advised that I was going to gut out his deer because I could get it done in 2 minutes flat!

FWIW, my daughter timed my gut job at 3m20s.

Man, I don't want to get my hand in your way when you are gutting! Was this his first deer? He looks quite pleased.

Congrats to everyone involved Jim ! Looks like some great steak in the freezer.

3min and some change ??? When are you coming back to CO ? I need to see that job performed on an elk

JD,

You know he's going to want to hunt that spot forever right? Not only does he get to shoot deer but has your pretty daughter on his arm.

Long,

Even though he is 6'5", he knows how well I shoot and that I also CCW. I just found out he is hunting there again in the AM.

He is a pretty good kid. He is the one with the 7mm RUM I developed a load for this past summer.

Good shooting for him. Man, I am not sure I could give away my daughter AND my prime hunting areas! You are a really good man! Plus, you load for this lad. This kid probably things he is KILLIN it! Scotty

JD -Great picture of a late season hunt!!
I always tell the new hunters that I will do the first one and maybe even "assist" on the second, after that they are on their own. This is part of the process so these young guys can take care of us down the road

+1

I have several teens that got in trouble this past year. They have no father in the picture. I have offered to take them hunting this coming year, cautioning them that they will work. I always make it a point to hunt with younger fellows so they can do the heavy lifting.
